Phil Jagielka

Agree 100% with this. His continuing lack of leadership is really sad to see. Where was he when Galloway got chopped down by Watford's grock centre forward? Should be in the ref's face demanding a red, but he wasn't. I'm genuinely convinced that PART of the reason we seem to be lacking in spirit on the field is down to Jags lacking in spirit himself.
Some people seem to think the armband is just symbolic and doesn't really amount to much. I beg to differ. If a player looks over at a captain and sees them offering no reaction they'll repeat that behaviour. Players need leadership on the field of play. It's always been the case and always will be the case.

I seen someone going wild but then the camera changed. Don't know who it was but I don't think it was Jagielka.

Lacking in spirit?

Spirit was about the only thing we showed on Saturday.

How much of a gobber did Gerrard look when he said re: Suarez 'Ill do everything to make him stay'. He left regardless, to a team challenging regularly for major honours and a bumper pay-rise. Gerrard, red-faced club captain looked like a fool.

Jagielka - who has no idea whether he will be sold or not, dodges the question to avoid being tomorrow's headline... and is therefore worthy of criticism apparently.

Right then.
That's irrelevant. Sold or not, a captain can't be kicking a question like that down the road. It's met with a straight hit down the fairway. There's no need for diplomacy, and certainly no need for evasion.

Is that feller sure he knows what football club he's captaining?

An absolute pisstake of a response.

It was 100% Jagielka.
I genuinely hope it was. Would love to see some footage showing him doing exactly that. Every other team in the league does it to their own advantage, and we are doing ourselves a disservice by not standing up for ourselves. How about last season, Ivanovic choking McCarthy in a headlock and not a word said? That could, and should have been a red, but no-one reacted to it, no-one demanded the ref deal with it.

Absolutely!

I've played a few team sports and the only non-negotiable thing I expect from any captain is that they back their players up without question every single time. I don't see how any captain can expect the confidence and respect of his team if he won't stand up for them.

Funny how you're so against slating the manager but are happy to slate the players, especially somebody like Jagielka who has been a model professional for us since day one.

Absolutely spot on.

@davek I often agree with you on the Martinez front, but you do EXACTLY the same as those you criticise in that thread as you do re: Jagielka in this. And it's utterly bonkers.

Apologies for the lack of basic courtesy, I forgot you'd even 'said' that tbh.

In response, I've never seen why getting in a human beings face (the referee), veins-pumping, spitting, swearing etc is a mark of a great leader.

I much prefer to point towards a number 9 one on one and our leader makes a vital last ditch tackle to deny a strike on goal.
I prefer to point a towards our leader shepherding and tutoring our prodigy centre-back through games (a point which stones has publically praised Jagielka for).

What about what others day about him in the leadership capacity?

Gerrard (England): "Just because I'm the captain with the armband on, I still want the likes of Frank Lampard, Wayne Rooney and Phil Jagielka to still be leaders in there with me and back me up and we all do it together."
Sorry about the "lack of courtesy" remark - I probably blew that out of proportion!

I'm not saying the mark of a great leader is imitating Keane and Stam chasing the ref around the pitch, but I do think that Jags should be far more active in "managing" the ref. Every other captain in the prem does it, and it's prevalent in many other sports too - look at rugby, where people like Richie McCaw spend the entire game constantly asking the ref to take action on the other team's infringements. It doesn't require spitting or swearing, but the substance of the interaction (getting the ref to favour your team, and showing your team that you will not let their opponents break the rules without demanding the ref punishes them) is very, very important IMHO.

The points in bold are, quite frankly, what I expect of Jags if he is to be a starting CB, let alone captain.

And the last bit..... you pointed out earlier that Gerrard opens his mouth and the majority of the time talks utter bobbins. Not sure he's the best person to quote! ;)

It was definitely Jags who lead the protests after the awful challenge on Galloway. ^.
