Phil Jagielka

Absolutely!

I've played a few team sports and the only non-negotiable thing I expect from any captain is that they back their players up without question every single time. I don't see how any captain can expect the confidence and respect of his team if he won't stand up for them.

Just not an organiser or leader.

I doubt very much if he hadn't already been captain Martinez would have installed him as captain.

It's strange. He's an established England centre back with bags of experience, but he has zero gravitas as a leader. Those things seldom go together but they do so in Jagielka's case.

Unquestionably one of the worst captains in Everton's recent history.

Funny how you're so against slating the manager but are happy to slate the players, especially somebody like Jagielka who has been a model professional for us since day one.

I'm not against slating the manager. I'm against sacking him after 90 minutes.

Deal with the issue: Jagielka's comments.

Your posting history suggests otherwise.

You defend him to the hilt but feel quite happy abusing a player who has been a very important part of our team, a player who incidentally Martinez clearly rates highly.

He'd probably think you were a tit for your comments about Jagielka.

Ridiculous?

D'you think those comments are compatible with being the Everton captain?

I think it's compatible with someone actually being truthful and respectful...the situation doesn't need any more wood on the fire. Do you honestly think he'd like to see John gone? He doesn't need to say what everyone knows and if 99% of people don't think he'd like him to stay...well, it'd explain the transfer thread insanity.

People are losing their rag over everything...I'm vibing that you're going this way too; you're typically better at staying on point TBH. And why are you bothered about comments that are in relation to someone you keep being flippant about as regards to selling him?

That's absolute tosh mate.

You go on the offensive in your defence of Martinez and ask all to look at the bigger picture. It's admirable and I share your view.

It's the exact opposite for Jagielka and I just hope to God your sat somewhere laughing at your own long-term popcorning "agenda".

If not, you're most certainly the most hypocritical poster on here by a long, long way.

This, this, this.

It isn't just me mate. Plenty more people on this thread who took those comments as bizarre for an Everton captain to make.

I mean, the feller's saying he has no view on the matter. He's the captain and should be answering: "as far as I'm concerned there's no better club than this one for him to be at right now". How was that not his automatic response? He made Everton sound like two bob when he, the captain, cant defend it with honour.

To swing this round to me is very poor. It's a deflection of the issue.

That fits very nicely into your other obnoxious responses.

Well done Taffy.

Oh and regarding the comments, i must be mellowing in my old age because i honestly couldn't give a toss. He made some quite sensible comments as far as i'm concerned, quite why people feel the need to be outraged at such things is beyond me.

You calling somebody else obnoxious.

Hysterical nonsense.

Everton managers no matter who they are should always be there to critique. My defence of Martinez has never been a warts and all, bloody minded one. I've criticised him many times in the past and will continue to do so.

I'm entirely consistent, not fickle and selective.

As said, the issue here is Jagilelka's comments. If you think they're ok then good luck to you. To me and others they're the words of a weak captain with no pride in either his position or the club he plays for.

You've slipped here, Davey K... :coffee:

You, of all people, throwing out emotional claptrap about "honour" and "pride"...stop pandering to the knee jerk brigade you so vehemently despise. John's said NOTHING during all this BS, so maybe Phil really doesn't feel the need to either? They see each other almost every day, I'm sure they're on the same page.

Going after players, FFS...you know where the issue originates, if there is one.

Reporter: "what's your opinion about Stones and this business of going to Chelsea?"
Everton captain: "I'm not arsed either way".

Positively Churchillian...hairs standing up on the back of my neck. Heart swelling with pride.

Form an orderly queue please prospective late summer signings. How can you fail to be swayed by that rousing war cry from Everton's "captain"?
