Phil Jagielka

Where was he last season then, this "fantastic buy"?

Hiding behind the couch avoiding the boos at Goodison.

He was standing still in shock at how his manager had lost the plot, like everyone else in the squad. Under Koeman he has, so far, been very solid.

I don't think Jags has ever been a natural leader - it's something that was thrust on him and that, at times, he's looked a little uncomfortable with. He's been, however, a good defender for many years and remains so. He'll almost certainly see his role diminish over the next two seasons but for now he and Williams look like an excellent partnership.

He was chosen as captain for the next season by David Moyes when Phil Neville announced his retirement, at a time when Moyes knew he was already off to United... a final act of arrogance from ol' carrot top imo and Martinez would've looked bad if he'd chosen another captain.

If he was anywhere near a couch it was primarily because Oxlade Chamberlain mistook his knee for a football.

However at Wembley he did make a valiant, but ultimately unsuccesful, attempt carry the entire team on his shoulders despite a hamstring injury.

Aye, @tommye will probably stick a dunce hat on my head again for getting sucked in!

But Jags is worth it, love him to bits... which will probably lead me into a cat fight with @Bungle so it could be an interesting week lol

All of this talk about Jagielka not being a leader is rubbish. He leads by example not through screaming and shouting, has a quiet word rather than showing up his team mates by lambasting them in full view of everybody.

Remember that England game we got mullered/knocked out of the euro's or something and 'Captain' Gerrard wouldn't come out and face the cameras? Jags did because thats what leaders do. Take responsibility. Being a captain doesn't have to involve screaming and shouting.
