I can't really weigh in on his attributes as a captain, since that's something only the players can judge, but as a centre half he's probably been one of the best in the league thus far this season. This might be the best form I've ever seen him in.

To be fair smelling has had a cracking start to the season so far, would partner him with stones now until the euros see how they do

If you don't rate Smalling by now you are not paying attention. He has his flaws but he is a very good defender.

....remember watching Smalling at Goodison playing for Fulham. He was straight out of non-league but really impressive.

Smelling and Stones should be the long term pairing for England with Jags first reserve but only because of his age, he's still boss, better than Stones today but he'll never get the headlines.

Like a lot of other players when he is fit and in form he is great. He's been very good this season and found his form quickly. For me still one of the top CBs in the prem. we'll miss him massively when he goes. Brilliant defender.
