Phil Jagielka

I think Jags is at his best when he trusts his partner in defence. He was great alongside Lescott. He was good with Distin (until last season) and he regained his best form when Stones was brought back in last season.

I've been really impressed with him this season. Long may it continue.
He'll go walkabout at some point if past seasons are a guide. Hopefully it's why Mori was bought. We need genuine competition for his place. Mori is left footed, so Jagielka should expect his berth to be under scrutiny.

The same surely goes for every player though? Perform to a high standard and they get in the team. Perform poorly and their place is under scrutiny and up for grabs.

The same principle with Naismith. Competition for places becomes a farce if a player can't force their way into the team by performing better than other players. Until Mori, or any other player, is performing better than Jags, in that role, then he stays in the team.

Yeah, that's fair enough. And having the armband shouldn't matter either.

Boss the way he keeps having you off every week by turning in World Class Defensive Masterclasses.
Wait a few weeks, he'll be toeing it into his own net, diving under crosses knocked into the box and playing through balls for forwards to run on to.

Yeah, he has been flexible in that respect. He has his qualities, I know that. He'll never be a captain for me. I think I'd like him more if it was taken by someone else. On the pitch he's not a great leader. He should be given his status for club and country, but he's a bit of a wallflower.

It's odd the way you claim he's no leader but Moyes and Martinez see he is, as for the wallflower comment it again seems to go against the grain from his contemporise like Gerrard and Rooney who've both openly admitted to be grateful to the leadership qualities Jags brings to the England squad.

So given you admit he's got qualities, his past and present mangers have utmost faith in him and his teammates with higher profiles back his influence I'd say you're very wrong on this.

We'll see. Happy to be proven wrong as he moves through a rolls royce season.

Can't rember him doing any of these things on a consistent basis. His partnership with Distin was not great. Both were recovery defenders, see the danger then deal with it. So as a pairing they were susceptible to being outdone by a big man getting the run on them from long diagonals. If he's next to a proactive defender like Lescott or Stones who also take the ball out so Jags can just focus on defending, he performs very well as part of good partnerships. The prem is full of far worse and not too many better than Jags.
