As someone has pointed out, clubs don’t bid if a player isn’t interested. Agents give them the encouragement they want. How often do you see a club officially bid only to be told thanks but no thanks?

don’t read the codswalloo in the papers. He may prefer spurs but no idea how that impacts on whether he would be keen on Everton.

...unless it’s Southampton who are inviting offers in the hope of a bidding war. The last thing they will want is negotiating with Levy when he holds all the aces.

There could be positive ‘noises’ coming from the players agent. It’s in his interest to get the highest fee/salary possible as it impacts his %.

nailed it.

He wasn't for me mate - he was very good alongside Gana until the Anfield collapse then like the team was bang average until the last 7-8 games when we went on that good run.

Basically from September - December then April - May last season he was good, January - March he was crap and all of this season he has been crap.
I accept that. But We’ve seen that he can play at a better level and it’s up to the club to create the environment where he flourishes. Hes not the biggest problem in our midfield.

I tend to agree. His stats are bolstered with simple 10 yard passes and pointing.

All of this media 'he's never been dribbled past' was a crock of rubbish too. When he's really tested he's never to be seen, great player don't get me wrong - but he's only a great player in this current crop of players, he's not close to Vidic or Ferdinand, John Terry or a whole host of others.

Some people listen to Kopites too much.

when city spend the whole season with garcia/stones with otamendi, chelsea have zouma, rudiger, christiansen; arsenal have luiz and mustafi; united have maguire and lindleof etc it's always going to look rubbish. Spurs' great centre backs are on the decline too as well, but none of the top teams have great centre backs, even leicester, us and wolves have average like johnny evans, michael keane and connor coady. Of course it's going to make him look better. You see the best clubs all around the world with only decent centre backs, if he was around in the 90's nobody would even notice him.

Did you get around to naming the 10 better in the league yet? You have ruled out plenty there?

The point is he wasn't exactly great before his ankle injury mate.
Before his injury he wasn't bad - we all saw his ability. I'm not saying he was a world beater. He was running at teams, shielded, retained and passed the ball quite well. Yes he wasn't as consistent as we'd like but that's expected when there's literally no like level talent around him. Plus he needs to be fully fit to he effective and obviously needs other talent alongside him as any top 6 side has.

The Athletic understands that Tottenham are frontrunners for Hojbjerg’s signature and that the player’s preference is to join the Londoners. Ajax have expressed tentative interest.
Hojbjerg is believed to want Champions League football next season, and while that won’t happen at Tottenham he is said to believe it is most likely to happen there sooner rather than later.
It leaves Everton with an uphill task to convince him to move to a club that are not guaranteed to finish above Southampton, where he has been happy but will not sign a new contract because of his burning desire for success.
It may not be Hojbjerg, but it is clear that a player of his ilk is what Ancelotti wants before anything else this summer.
And if the Everton manager’s star name is not enough to lure the 24-year-old to Merseyside, Ancelotti will waste no time finding an alternative.
He’s seen enough of Everton’s current midfield. The time to do something about it has arrived

Since when did The Athletic turn from footie articles to transfer gossip

I suspect Southampton may have contacted us and invited to bid. Pure inference but I would imagine Levy will want to straight swap Peters for Hojberg. Seems like the sort of thing he'd do.

I had a little look at his stats. Focussed on 3 things really, number of tackles per game, number of psses per game and key passes per game. For a midfielder in a two they seem the 3 key stats to me. How ften does he break play up, how involved is he in posession and how many chances does he make.

2.5 tackles per game is better than any of our midfielders. Only Schneiderlin close with 2.1. MIles ahead of others. Passes again, 56 per game, miles ahead of our midifelders. His 0.9 Key passes is just under SIgurdsson (who does take free kicks) and around the Bernard/Iwobi level.

I mean it's very crude, but essentially he's like a Schneiderlin without the ball (a bit better) and as creative as say a Bernard/Iwobi with it and also makes more passes than any of our midfielders.

It's a crude analysis, and there are other aspects of the game and much cuter ways to measure data. It is also true stats can be deceptive. However he seems a decent alrounder to me in a 2. He won'tsolve all the problems but will probably help.
