If somehow Sanders became POTUS it would be a sensation. Imagine how much the goalposts would move here in Britain, a true left wing socialist as President who has already gone on record praising Jeremy Corbyn.
The bookies have Clinton as short as 1/10 to win the Democrat nomination, sadly I think they might be right. As much as I would love Sanders to get the nod I just dont see it.
On the Republican side I think Trump has to be taken seriously, he's been out in front in most polls for a while now. Surprised Carson in one or two has polled above Trump, Bush and Rubio. He's so boring, lacks that X factor needed to be President, I suspect he'll fall away in the coming weeks.
One time favourite Jeb Bush is also dead in the water IMO, the reduction of campaign funds suggests even he believes his chance has gone. Rubio presents by far the biggest opposition to Trump, watching the recent GOP debate he was decent but not outstanding, when they scale down due to drop outs from 10 candidates on stage to 3/4 I think he may struggle to contrain a Trump onslaught.
Im going for Trump vs Clinton. What a blockbuster that race would be.
For those with an interest in politics check out David Axelrods podcast. (The Ax Files). He's had some cracking guest of late on (Bernie Sanders, Mitt Romney)
Seems like it's going to be Rubio v. Clinton
The fact Trump has any kind of support embarrasses the US on the global stage. Rest of the world just laughing at them.
I'm with this. Prepare the vaults.
Trump and Carson are getting attention because there's money to be made by giving them face time. The powers that be (mostly Fox News in the case of the Republican primary) have picked their horse after the last debate, and they'll be smothering Rubio from here on out. It's already started.
Sidenote: No, I don't believe media has a huge influence on general elections, but I do think they have a big influence on primaries where the policy differences between candidates are small anyway.
And I'll be voting for Sanders in the primary, but I've already accepted that Clinton will get the nod. Hopefully, if nothing else, this primary for the Dems shows that rumors of American Left's demise have been greatly exaggerated. It was supposed to be a foregone conclusion, so the fact that it's a fight gives me a lot of hope.
I think (mostly) that Trump and Sanders are good or the primaries; there's great fatigue among voters, but I think we need more moderate elected officials. The growth of the gap between parties has been harmful (in my opinion) and I think we'd be better off with more middle of the road politicians*. Bush, Clinton, and (probably) Rubio seem to fit this trend toward moderation.
This is an entirely interesting/disheartening read:
