Anyone reckon Trump could actually be president? I was assuming that him winning the republican nomination would just hand the democrat candidate the victory.

About a 10% chance IMO. Once he's in the position of front runner, all it would take is something like a 9/11 to get people clamouring for his extremist policies and make the Dem candidate a weaker choice.

He should never be allowed to be in a two horse race though.

America would be electing a sociopathic egotist1 as President on an anti-foreigner or anti-everything-white-American ticket.

That would indicate popular support for such actions. The USA would overnight become a very uncomfortable place to live for a lot of people.

I don't want to use the "Nazi" card, but those who denounced the Weimar Republic and voted for the NSDAP weren't consciously approving the gassing of millions of Jews, but they were nevertheless supporting such actions by voting them in, as it wasn't a hidden secret what Hitler's views were at the time. This is the same thing - if you don't denounce something, you passively or actively support it.2

Trump getting the Republican nomination would be a sad day for America, but him becoming President would be a disastrous one.3
1 That has been every president for a long while now.

2 Wow, just wow.

3 IMO it's not going to be great if it happens but there have been a string of decisions from presidents on both "sides" of the aisle that have been swept under the rug that have had a huge impact on things you're talking about but no one ever talks about. A couple of the most recent being Obama's illegal irresponsible drone war and his signing into law the newest version of a sedition act that does not guarantee a trial by jury (a constitutional right) or being charged of any crime to be indefinitely detained without that information being passed to the family. That comes into effect if you fall into a broad brush characterization of a domestic terrorist. Scary things are being done underneath our noses all the time but all anyone seems to care about is just who gets elected every four years not really what they do.

You can say "wow" all you want really. Here are the similarities:

1 - Running on a "make the country great again" Nationalist card.
2 - Doing so whilst scapegoating a portion of the community and suggesting excluding them totally as a solution.
3 - The people voting for him are doing so to vote against the establishment in favour of a maverick in a time of perceived desperation.

History is what it is. Parallels can be seen.

Have you seen this.

I have mate. Have you see this?

No you're making a historical statement about the future. Strange. Are you living in America? I definitely mix in all sorts of circles up and down the socioeconomic scale and I definitely wouldn't describe the situation as perceived by people as desperate.

Also "making the country great again" is used by almost every candidate (in some semantic form or another) in both parties.

There's a bit of a difference between a positive, inclusive "Yes We Can!" slogan and "make the country great again" by building a massive wall to keep people out mate.

And no, I don't live in the USA, but I don't have to. If you really think it's strange to attempt to learn from history, then that says it all really.
