Project restart discussion.

Think about what a pub is. Then think about how many of them there are across the country. Then think about how many people on average gather in them to watch a game of football on ONE television screen.

Then connect the dots.
All I'm saying here is the idea that this restart was going to have no interest was stated fairly frequently around here and is not true.

Its more of a novelty mate. And curiosity.

Novelty because 30 odd games are on free to air, so folk like me can actually watch one, and curiosity cos, well, thats obvious.

I’m going to attempt to explain the concept of pubs in detail here, this could go severely wrong but oh well.

I own a pub, it’s called the Big Red YNWA Arms. I have a Sky subscription and am screening tonight’s Merseyside Derby live on the big screen. I’m expecting around 150 Big Red fans in to watch the game. That’s 150 household televisions that will be turned off or on another channel.

A WILD PANDEMIC APPEARS! My pub has been shut down and I can no longer host 150 fans to watch the football match on my one television. That’s 150 household televisions that will now be switching right over to said football match.

The level of interest in the match has, at best, stayed the same. However, there is now massively distorted television viewing numbers which you wouldn’t get on a normal day, where those people would’ve all viewed the match on the same screen. If you factor in the 40,000 people that would’ve been in the ground as well, then you’re looking at an awful lot more televisions that could have been switched over on the night as well.

Ademola Lookman is a poor football player.

I'm not disputing anything you are saying right now. Only that weeks ago when people were saying that coming back would have no interest they were wrong even if the reality is the interest is down because people who are normally out for games are at home. But there is still interest at some level!

I always thought this restart malarkey would be garbage, and have been proved right. I watched the tedious first half out of interest but switched to antiques roadshow at half time, which was more entertaining than watching the second half of what was basically a training game. This version of football is dead to me.

BARB research suggests that less than 6% of total viewing will be pub based when it comes to major sporting events and, since 2016, Nielsen TAR (total audience ratings) figures adjust to include Pubs, gyms, Airports etc so your argument about the Big Red Arms is questionable, furthermore there will be a significant increase in small gatherings given the pubs are closed with more eyeballs per household than usual, which will not be captured in overnights; which is the only data available at present.

reality is there are a lot of people watching this, probably out for morbid curiosity, factored with the lack of holidays etc & will reduce once the novelty has worn off
