That is not the issue. It's a case of performance. And he did jack. Rice was doing the defensive midfielder's job to perfection (a la Gary Speed for us years ago). The same goes for Bellingham, who contributed absolutely nothing last night. I've got nothing against the lad at all. Inexperienced, and it showed, while experienced players were left on the bench. Southgate got it wrong, totally, and some people can't see it...

He’s just not quite been good enough. I know he’s scored all these goals for England but in the biggest moments he’s fluffed his lines. 1-0 up against Croatia in the semi final and he managed to miss an open net. He should arguably have scored the one that Lloris saves as well after he spun the defender. Big moments separate the world best from the worlds very good.

He was at fault for the first goal: miles off Tchouameni and sold Pickford down the swanny by allowing the ball to travel through his legs. Later, he was trying to get Hernandez sent off after the penalty was awarded, despite the foul not denying a goalscoring opportunity as Mount was not in control of it, and added even further delay before Kane could launch into orbit.
He's a very talented player - but as always with England the hype is ludicrous.
Can I prefix anything I now say with “I am not an England hating person, I did want to see them beaten last night but purely because I think the French are the better side”. I did find the commentary of Lee Dixon very biased and xenophobia. I didn’t watch any of the half time punditry because I don’t enjoy the way these so called experts usually conduct themselves when England are not winning.
Having said that I think England are a good international team, indeed they are a very good international team, certainly in the top ten in the world. Some of their players are very good but not world class. When you have players at the level of Henderson and Maguire in your starting 11 you are going to struggle against the very best. I thought they would get to the quarterfinals, even the semifinals if they got a good draw, unfortunately for them they got the French.
I see no reason why England can’t produce a tournament winning side, most of their players play in one of the top five leagues in the world, even if the style of play in that league is a bit frenetic and doesn’t seem to lend itself to international football. There are good English footballers but it seems, as an outsider, that there is something missing, something stopping them from being truly great.
Confidence is great in a player and in a team but not when it turns to arrogance, I listened to all the hype after they put 6 past Iran, they became world beaters, is that hype getting through to the team?
I watched last nights game and found it difficult to see what the tactics were, I would be the first to admit that I know very little about football at that level but I thought the French were very comfortable when England had the ball, penalty’s aside, they looked like a side who knew England couldn’t hurt them from open play. They seemed content to let England commit players forward because they knew if they got their defence turned then England were in trouble.
I don’t know what was in the heads of those England players who were toppling over at the merest touch, did not getting free kicks and bookings for French players get to them, did that effect their mentality and then their play. It appeared to me they were more interested in trying to win free kicks than in trying to win the game.
There was a period after they scored that they had a grip on the game, at that point I thought they would go on to win the game but that fizzled out. My over riding memory of the game will be Bellingham arguing with the referee after the award of the second penalty to have the French player sent off and Maguire going down in the second half when someone bumped into him.
Ironically I think England don’t get beaten often enough, I think they need to use friendly games and even qualifying games, in tournaments were they know they will qualify, to try out different things and players. I think they need to realise that there is no importance in getting beaten in a summer friendly or tour game. You don’t need to sack the manager or berate players because they tried to experiment and do something different when it doesn’t work. What they need is to learn how to deal with adversity, how to change when things aren’t working. There needs to be an assurance that in the face of adversity they can change, they have the ability and mindset to change and work to win rather than an acceptance that because they are all brilliant that they will win.
England got to the European final last time out, they were beaten by the World Champions in the quarterfinals of the World Cup, that isn’t bad, it is good but they need to recognise that. They need to accept that this is where they currently are in the world of football and build on it rather than blame other things on why they didn’t win the tournament. My analysis, as an outsider, may be coloured by the commentary and punditry that surrounds England at big tournaments but it seems that there is an arrogance and an expectation that they will win rather than a realisation they need to work very hard to win.

It might well be, but the way the Welsh and Americans were taunted here earlier in the tournament meant it was all coming back to the English when elimination inevitably arrived.

This sums up England, in general. It's not good enough for some that England have some very good players and have a very good team. They have to be "world beaters" - but they're not. And that hype eventually crushes even their very good players. Kane is a fine player. England have quite a few very good players. But until they have a genuine genius, a collection of world-class players, and a little perspective, they're not winning anything.
