So where is the minimum position for Benitez to finish in the league? I would really like to know what success looks like for you.
To be an upgrade on Carlo, 9th, if he gets us 9th he has done a better job then he did, in away its lucky for Rafael he has a very easy act to follow.

So you'd rather get more points and achieve less. Got it.

You should stick to fantasizing about teenagers in "farmer's leagues"

I just realised that youre pushing this nonsense because you want to make an excuse for Benitez to fail.

No one with half a brain would think a manager could affect other teams results lol

But then again if you love Benitez...

"When Benitez falls short of Ancelotti's 59pts he'll have succeeded"

...seems to he the current narrative. As long as other teams have lower points totals than last season :)

Couldnt make it up lol

A sprinter runs a time of 10 seconds all year in the 100 metres.

He keeps finishing without a medal and hires a new coach.

The following year he runs 10.5 seconds and wins gold.

Has the coach improved him?
Does he care more about the performance or the result? He finally won the gold medal which was his ultimate goal. He won't shed many tears that he was slower.

Unless you think he wanted 9.9 and 4th. But why be better if you can be best?

I haven't seen many Olympic Gold medal winners complaining that they didn't break records or hit PB's.

I think the points total is a red herring. Covid made it a weird season. Also the top clubs have strengthened so I see City, Utd and Chelsea scoring a lot of points this season. If we can come in the top half that would be ok, especially if we don't recruit many more players. To be honest if we can just turn in a few entertaining performances it would be an improvement on last season's snore fest!

He has to beat 59 points to improve on Ancelotti.

Simple as that really.
Since when did we start caring about points totals. League finish is all that matters. I’m 86 we got 86 points. In 87 we got 86 points. Was 87 not an improvement.

Points are the best indication of how we have done in the league.
Its relation to Position is only an indication of how competitive the league is.

High position, low points. The bottom half of the league is nearly as difficult to beat as the top half, everyone takes points of each other. Tight league.
Low position, high point. Rampant inequality between the top and bottom of the league. Some teams get beat by everyone and the teams at the top run away with it.

He needs to finish above 10th to be seen as any improvement, points their relative positions fluctuate with all sort of different variables.

Above 10th, and he will be getting us on the right track, 10th or below and there is not a chance the sees out his contract.

I actually voted in the other thread we will finish below 10th, not because of Benitez - I am actually pleasantly surprised about how he seems to be working on the training ground and everything - he seems to be working hard for the opportunity, I just don't think we will do much without serious player upgrades this year.

I still don't like Benitez... that won't change. he's got a massive set on him though I will give him that.

I think the fans will not be happy if we don’t improve on last year. That being said it might be an uphill challenge if we don’t improve the squad. Suspect the club will back him next summer if they can sort out FFP etc.

If he has a poor start I can see the fans being at boiling point by Christmas or earlier.
