He needs to finish above 10th to be seen as any improvement, points their relative positions fluctuate with all sort of different variables.

Above 10th, and he will be getting us on the right track, 10th or below and there is not a chance the sees out his contract.

I actually voted in the other thread we will finish below 10th, not because of Benitez - I am actually pleasantly surprised about how he seems to be working on the training ground and everything - he seems to be working hard for the opportunity, I just don't think we will do much without serious player upgrades this year.

I still don't like Benitez... that won't change. he's got a massive set on him though I will give him that.

Can't disagree with any of this.

I actually think, finishing top half could even be deemed an achievement in its own right, well, unless we actually pull our finger out and sign a right-back and someone else up top.

yeah I think that anything above 10th will be painted as a good achievement without signings

If we can get a first team RB in and, assuming the rest of the squad stays the same, we should be comfortably able to finish in the top 10.

I think we will but I wouldn't say comfortable by any stretch - the reality is there are 11-12 good clubs in the league who on a good season can overachieve look at WHU/Leeds.

City
Utd
RS
Chelsea
Leicester
Spurs
Arsenal
West Ham
Villa
Wolves
Leeds

Thats 11 clubs in which 9 finished above us, the other two that never - Villa are throwing money around and Wolves could get a new manager bounce.

Until our accounts sheet improves and we can start spending serious money on rebuilding the squad we have to acknowledge top 7/European qualification isn't a guarantee and neither is top half.

Nobody is talking more sense on this entire forum then you on this thread, keep it up mate!!

All of a sudden its Europe or a disopointment??? Talk about ramping up expectiions we have no right whatsoever to have just to suit your anti-Ben agenda. One of the greatest of all time couldn't get them 9th.

Top 12. And then start trying to build a side for European hopefulls in next couple of years. Istanbul wasn't built in a day.

Funny how the club keep pushing the ‘ambitious, challenging for Europe and trophies’ line when even the super fans have realised we’ll be struggling to finish top half next season.

All this talk of 6th and 60+ points is fanciful at this stage - the club/Benitez has a big rebuild job on its hands and patience and cool heads are required whilst we slowly boot out the lazy players and replace them with pacey fighters.

Bollocks. It’s widely regarded that Ancelotti failed his and the clubs objectives by not getting us into Europe last season (a target which he spoke about openly at the start of the season and various points throughout).

Benitez needs to be held to the same requirements.

I don’t expect him to, but anything less than europa conference league is a failure.

Ancelotti failed. Benítez will likely fail. Who do think could succeed with our current squad?

Ancelotti finished 10th & 12th and was still in a job mate.

Its not failure at this club currently - the days of the board sacking managers for not finishing top 7 is over.

I agree top 7 should be the aim but we have to be realistic in that we haven't played in Europe since Ronald Koeman was manager - the squad is full of bang average players and we need to rebuild which starts this summer.

That’s not what I’m saying.

I’m saying anything less than Europe is a failure, as that is, or should be our aim. Just as it’s been every season and every manager has failed in delivering since Koeman.

Ive just realised I quoted the wrong post anyway and it was actually @Death who mentioned Europe, but the point stands.

I’m not saying he’ll be getting sacked for finishing outside of Europe, but we can’t be judging it a success, the same way I’m not willing to say ancelotti was a success.
