The hatred is more because he won stuff with them. He is one of their legends (or was anyway, dunno what they think of him now).90% of people who dislike Benitez from the get go do so based on that comment. Its not just the LFC connection as plenty on here like Rodgers who was arguably more smarmy as manager there than Benitez was.
And the comment itself wasn't even aimed at Everton it was a dig at Moyes tactics that derby game.
Was certainly sour apples but most trophy winning managers at that time carried on like that - Wenger was the worst going for it.

He is on banners in the kop and they had him dancing around on stage in plays etc.
Nobody has any real strong opinions about Rodgers because he didn't win anything with them and was a bit of a comedy character there because his weirdness was ultra magnified with their weirdo fans behind him. Rodgers isn't mainly known as being Liverpool manager whereas Benitez is/was synonymous with them.
Which shows how insecure we are as a fanbase when it comes to them tbh.
Could you imagine how much they would have loved rubbing it in having Kendall or any EFC legend cross the divide over to Anfield.
Even if they aint arsed as they have Klopp it at least sours his legacy with them somewhat if he makes a decent go of it here given time and money.
I mean, they definitely think he is. It makes no sense, but that is what they think.
Sensible post overall, but let’s not use the relegation word just yet. Or ever. There’s no way we’ll ever face the threat of relegation under Benitez, no matter how unlucky we get with injuries. We are still in the top 10 and we have just two fewer points than we had at this stage last season - and we had the most decorated manager in history at the helm!
Benitez spent just £2million in the summer and he has had extraordinary luck with injuries. We have missed DCL and Doucoure particularly acutely in recent weeks. Even the likes of Man City wouldn’t thrive if they were without their top goalscorer and their best midfielder for weeks.
If R.A.F.A. can’t arrest this slide within the next 5 or 6 weeks and it looks like we will be at risk of relegation then of course we will have to consider a change, but I can’t see that being the case. This is a long-term project. Only rich clubs like Chelsea can get away with changing their managers every other season.
THAT Comment didnt help in anyway but I'm not sure you can level that at 90%, mainly for me, its a Red and Blue thing, always will be.90% of people who dislike Benitez from the get go do so based on that comment. They would never have even considered Howard Kendall, never in a million years, and I'm pretty confident that Howard would never once have considered that lot!Which shows how insecure we are as a fanbase when it comes to them tbh.

Whilst I am here I would like to voice my displeasure at the utter lack of respect that Eddie Howe receives. He did a ridiculously good job at Bournemouth. I don't know if he is someone I would go for or anything but he is obviously a bit of talent. Up 4 divisions and into top flight regulars even with a sabbatical in the middle for a club who are traditionally no bigger than say Tranmere.
Maybe we should get a DOF , he/she could be in charge of buying and selling players and keeping a finger on the pulse of any up and coming players and managers. We don’t let players go too cheaply, we pay too much for them, pay them too much and create our own problem when we try to get rid of them. We need to sort out our transfer policy, we seem to identify players we want and then lose them because we won’t pay market value and then find ourselves in a position where we buy lesser players for inflated prices and have to give them a wage which they don’t deserve.
I would rather pay over the odds for a good player we want rather than pay way over the odds on a panic buy.
Totally agree, it’s very weird. Bournemouth had literally never been on the radar during my 40 years on earth until Howe.Whilst I am here I would like to voice my displeasure at the utter lack of respect that Eddie Howe receives. Hey non mate, why are you trying to wind good blues up? ?He'll always be the Rafatollah - anyone who can make grown men cry and burn their season tickets based on nothing more than a comment made 15 years ago is a ledge in my eyes.
