I’ve been calling for a shake up of our medical department for years. Benitez has done it within months of joining. Why didn’t any of Brands Koeman Silva Ancelotti do this upon arrival? It’s been as clear as day to anyone watching Everton that our inability to keep our best players on the pitch for any continuous amount of time is a major reason why we’ve been so poor for so long.

Hopefully it’s a salient lesson to everyone at the club. Get better at your job or you’re out. The holiday camp is finally starting to behave like a football club.
This is how Benitez works. He is a manager who looks for all the details that can make the team better, whether it is on the training field, the medical apparatus, the analysis team, etc. He thinks football all the time, and is systematic and structured.

At the same time, he expects everyone to have the same attitude, whether it concerns players or others in the staff, which can lead to conflicts. I suspect that there is quite a lot that can be professionalized at Everton, and we are far behind the best clubs here. Therefore, I think Benitez is perfect for us in a period of transition.

Wait til our next injury, and people will blame Benitez for it, because he got rid of someone.

Bloody Danny Donachie only playing 2 midfielders against Wolves and not changing it when we were overrun.

What sort of a medical professional is he ?
Our players consistently get injuries and reagrivate them.

If he is responsable for fitness of players and their health, clearly wasn't any good at it.
Feels like the sort of tactic that might see a team concede 4 goals in the last ten minutes as the midfield gasps for breath.

Benitez is known for his 4 goal concede throughout his career. I remember well when his team's capulated before winning the European cup and Europa League......

For a manager that trademarks conceding so many goals , he wins an awful lot more than we do!

We've chopped and changed this department numerous times in the post Moyes period.

Not always. Medical folk know a lot, but they dont know everything.
That’s what medical trials are for. Any substance that shows promise is tested in a rigorous scientific way to determine its effectiveness.

If it works, and doesn’t cause any other harm, it becomes medicine. That’s all it takes. There’s no bias against any plant, fungus, animal extract, chemical or anything else. Anything can be medicine if it’s effective - from a newly synthesised chemical to an ancient herb.

‘Alternative’ medicine consists of what’s left. What has been proven not to work.

It’s a BS industry that at best offers people some mental well-being - and at worst literally kills people who put their faith in it.

I know nothing about sports science, but this sounds reasonable to me as a layman…

I guess this is something they can actually quantify (VO2 max etc.), but wouldn’t a player need to have a record of their numbers when they are 100% fit first, in order to calculate what 85% looks like?

Good luck getting the 100% readings from this bunch of crocks!

I work as physiologist and during pre season each player will probably have been pushed to what they feel is their "peak performance level" from there you can work various things out, you want the 85% level so that if during a game you need players to give that little bit extra then they have it in their locker to actually give. As for injuries and the medical dept, well injuries in professional sport tend to come from lack of conditioning, diet, and proper recovery time or some studies in recent years have shown people with irregular collagen levels in the body can be more prone to injury. Knowing each players "peak performance level" is how you stop it as you work out what the best level is for them to play at which in an ideal world will help prevent future injuries. The pressure for success is so high in football though that players get rushed and forced into playing and overall it ends up causing a negative and players end up out for longer than need be. It's a bit of a vicious circle tbh. A healthy squad that can rotate and keep a decent level of fitness is the answer.

Against Wolves and Watford . That's laughable .

the greatest Barcelona team of all time, potentially the greatest football team of all time, lost at home to a Hercules side with Drenthe playing for them. It’s irrelevant who losses are against. City got beaten by Norwich at home the season before last, maybe they should have fired Pep.
