We can only compare like with like:

In 2010/11 Moyes took 16 points from the opening 15 games
This season Benitez has taken 18 points from first 15 games

We finished 7th that season under Moyes and I expect us to get pretty much near that this season under Benitez.

6 points off the top 6, 8 points away from the relegation zone. We’ve had an injury crisis, board room turmoil, a heap of bad luck, and a severe fixture list, yet the Armageddon crisis for Benitez is mid table 6 points off europe. Lol. The revolution is dead and some can’t accept it, there’s just no heat in it whatsoever. Neither the players, nor the board, have any credibility banked to get the majority of fans on side against Benitez. Most people now see that aligning behind the manager and letting him get to work on fixing some of the fundamental issues at the club is the best way forward. Moshiri is behind him, and the players are finally behind him. Most fans, apart from a few on here who just want to see the world burn for Everton every season, have accepted the necessity of the situation as well.

Thanks Denise, great post.

So this is the plan, give this character full control?

He was lucky to get the job, now he’s basically been given carte blanche to rebuild the whole football side of the club the way he wants according to his “experience”.

I was okay with him being here for a few years to steady the ship in tough ffp times but this?

This is a long term project now. There’s no point letting him shape the club and playing staff and then binning him after a couple of seasons. Anyone who comes in takes over a club and staff modelled as Rafael wanted it.

Safe pair of hands for a few seasons I could live with. Not the manager I’d want to completely overhaul my football club.

It was one game fella, put it back in your pants for now!

It was always a long term project, no matter who the manager was, this shouldn't be a surprise to you. The club is a mess throughout and needs rebuilding.

Already managed to get the DoF binned, already managed to fall out with one of our better players, already managed to get James out of the door.

Oh, and already managed to lead us to our worst derby defeat in history at Goodison Park AND our worst Premier League run since the 90s.

Why do fans support him at all?

He got rid of James because he was earning to much for his return. You and others are using James as an excuse to bash Rafael, he was creatively brilliant in short spurts, but largely he gave no effort and didn't care. Look at him now, no one wanted him and he's in Qatar.

With Digne, no one knows what's happened, again using him as an excuse to bash Rafael.

Interesting first sentence.

Do you think that Benitez is "earning too much for his return ".

I suspect most will think so.

I don't use James really - I know why the club needed him gone, FFP wise. that being said, there should never ever have been any idea of getting rid of him outside of the transfer window. He could have been very useful for the first half of the season and gone in Jan.

There's been a pretty in depth piece on the athletic this morning saying Digne and Benitez have had discussions over his role all season, but they had an argument in training (in Spanish) the other day.
