Can anyone help me out here;

According to some, Brands was responsible for all the dross we signed while he was here. But Gray and Townsend, signed while he was here are evidence of great business by Benitez. Patterson and Mykolenko who we clearly identified and bid for under Brands, are, according to some, evidence of great business by Benitez.

Like him or hate him we've spent £32 million on the following :

Gray
Mykolenko
Townsend
Patterson

Done good business in the window so far considering we've previously paid £54 million for Iwobi & Toshun combined.

Hopefully he can bring someone like that Johnson lad in from Notts Forest and keep rebuilding the team.

I get the impression from his signings he wants to sign younger players who are perhaps more willing/eager to follow his instructions than potentially some of the more older players.

I'll judge come end of the season - we had plenty of seasons under Moist where we started awfully then picked up 2nd half so fingers crossed.

He's done a better job with transfers in 6 months than Koeman and Brands did in 6 years.

lol lol lol

...and so the fevered and blinkered criticism continues apace.

Case in point.

The 20 minutes after he went off was the period we lost control. We looked likely to make it 3-1 and then it was 2-2, and we just about held out for ET. The issue wasn't Townsend coming on, the issue was who went off. Rondon offered nothing at any point of the game, and should have been taken off, but Benitez has made it clear that he only comes off as a last resort, like we saw after 116 mins or something like that?
I presume all players wear GPS trackers now. Players would have indicators to show when they are completely gassed basically and when injuries are likely to happen. It plays a part in a lot of substitutions.

Well, your point was Anthony Gordon coming off.

Gordon was goosed. If some don't want to believe the manager, then believe the player - he's working on his stamina because he struggles to finish a full game.

Townsend was a capable replacement compared to what else we had;

I said the same during the game;

Good sub IMO.

Ran himself into the ground.

If you're going to critique Benitez for Hull, I'd say Doucoure needed to be on earlier to address midfield, as did Dobbin for Rondon.

Benitez does give Rondon too many minutes - I figure he starts him because perhaps Dobbin's hold up play won't bring others into the game but too many times now has Benitez give Rondon too long.

...well, it's good to see the debate has switched from the bankrupt "get him out" to one about who is responsible for the successful signings that have been made since Senor Benitez arrived.

That's progress of a sort, I suppose.
It was a genuine question. Nothing has shifted in my eyes. I praised Benitez when we were winning and I criticise him when he serves up excuses for losses while playing turgid football.

You should have a word with the @davek from previous managerial threads where you were extremely vocal at such things.

Yeah I wanted to bring on Doucoure at half time, and said so in fairness. But equally I don't think he had a great game when he did come on.

Rondon was very tired from early in the second half. Any time from the hour mark onwards that sub should have been made. If the manager thinks others were more tired then I don't think he's watching closely enough. I didn't actually realise Tosun was on the bench until he came on with a couple of minutes left. After Dobbin came on for Gray I had assumed Rondon was getting a full 120

It's difficult for Dobbin coming on at that point, with players struggling for legs well into extra time. He made a couple of poor decisions on counter attacks but did ok overall.

I suppose the young lad Patterson was also an option in wide areas if we were looking for more legs. I've actually seen us have much worse bench options in the past.

Yes he has, it's a shame it's taken so long and so many mistakes to get to this point. Unfortunately a clear down and wiping of the slate is required, this geezer in charge doesnt exactly inspire, and the togger being served up is tosh, but aslong as we survive this season, next season we go again.

I wonder if he survives this period, he'll step into the DOF role when we appoint another head coach to carry us forward.

For me you cant judge until the seasons end ultimately.

People can say we were 6th 19 games in under Carlo but come 38 games we were 10th.

We're 15th now 18 games in - come 38 games if we're 10th/11th then he gets a 2nd season for me.

Great business by Rafael in a sense he got the deals over the line in quick succession. If Brands was still here, we wouldn't even have signed anyone yet.

We bid for Patterson late in the day in the summer. There's next to no details of this deal having anything to do with Brands.

In terms of Mykolenko, there's only 1 tenuous source which said we scouted him a year ago.

If they're crap then they're under Brands.

Can't have it both ways. Either everyone signed under him was his signing or not.
