The hardest part of this thread is getting to grips with which side I want to align myself with, as there’s some massive helmets on both sides of the hyperbolic fence.

You don't have to position yourself at either end of the spectrum, mate, just somewhere in the middle.

I understand those that were against Benitez being appointed and don't blame them for feeling angry about it. Personally, I didn't want Benitez purely based on his recent record, not because he's ex-RS, although I did have concerns that things could turn nasty much more quickly if he had a bad start or bad run. I don't feel strongly about him managing the RS or about any comments he made about us while fighting his team's corner. Having said that, I should stress that I hate the RS with a passion. Not just the team, fans, etc, but the club itself.

Anyone who's seen the area around Anfield recently, with whole streets of houses boarded up and left to rot due to LFC's snide actions, knowing that it used to be a thriving area, would be angry. EFC are very much a community club. Community is at the very heart of our club and something we're very proud of, but LFC's actions were the antithesis of community. When you consider things like that, as well as the multiple other reasons to despise them, I can understand why some would never welcome anyone who has any kind of association with them.

For those who are staunchly pro-Benitez, some are going way over the top with their adulation for him. He's made a good start, but when I looked at our opening fixtures before the season started I thought they looked a lot less difficult than they could have been. We should expect to beat the likes of Norwich, Burnley and Southampton at home. I know it doesn't always work that way, but we should expect to beat some of the weakest teams in the league at Goodison. Those games were also a lot tighter than the scorelines suggest and were uncomfortable viewing at times.

I get that people are feeling positive about our good start and it's easy to get carried away. I suppose some of the praise for Benitez is exaggerated to counteract the negativity of others, or maybe just to wind them up. The team looks fitter, more positive, more aggressive and more resilient than the sorry mess we were in the latter part of last season. They're performing at a level I expect from the squad we have. Benitez deserves credit for that.

In an ideal world, I wouldn't want an ex-RS manager, but while he's here I want him to do well because I want my team to do well.

Why can't I give multiple thumbs up!!!

Remember thinking this exact thought in January. It proved to be right.

And I was saying it too, that I was happy with the results in December etc but we knew it wasn't going to be sustainable.

I think we're actually playing better than we did then from an attacking perspective, but a fair few of the games we've won have been based on 5-10 min flashes. That's all well and good but if that's what we've got then we're going to lose a lot of games in the manner we did at Villa.

I do think we played really well v Brighton and we did fine considering the injuries the other day. But we replicated the same style of performance we've seen in the league (i.e. little control in matches, an inability to keep the ball for any sustained spell) in the Cup, and we saw that with poorer players the results are proper tosh.
