Random things you hate in football

It's still a collision sport, and there are lots of different tackling techniques that can hurt someone, just like in any sport. I understand that Footballers are bigger, but they are hitting bigger guys, so it all balances itself out really.

I could understand light protection, but the difference between the two sports (in terms of protection) is vast, there's no need to wear these 'Incredible Hulk' fancy dress constumes. Take them off, or tone it down, and then you can call Soccer players pussies.

I never called soccer players pussys.. I said I hate diving. How could anyone who loves soccer defend diving and say it's an art is beyond me.

Every American plays full contact football without pads, everyday, hundreds of thousands of games are being played across this great country with no pads.. From toddlers to adults.

I respect and like Rugby, but the two sports are very different..

If done correctly and with the right technique, diving is an art. There's no question about it.

They don't wear padding in professional Football at the highest level? That's what counts really. If I'm wrong, correct me, but the games I've seen, they are all padded up.

Getting hit is getting hit, and whilst I can accept the different techniques, the body can be injured in so many different ways. I'd be fine with it if both Sports used similar padding, obviously to the point where it doesn't effect the game they are playing, but the difference is vast. I could jump off a huge building with that Space suit on and survive, most probably.

mate take a look at the types of injurys dealt in both sports..
I think you will find that Am. Football has far more severe injuries than Rugby which shouldn't be the case by your logic..
Considering you could jump off a building wearing plastic shoulder pads and head protection.

Injuries? What like getting my face smashed repeatedly by a prop when I'm sort of tied down in the middle of a ruck?

That's injuries man. And you still shake his hand at the end, he buys the beer though.

Mate, That sounds like a fun sport to play.. Worst that can come out of it is some battle scars..
(I'm sure there are serious injuries in Rugby, no doubt)

I'm talking paralyzing hits, broken necks, concussion after concussion, Broken limbs..

Strangely it's fun. There's a team trying to get me to play for them now but I'm swerving it as I'm thinking of slipping into my middle years in relative comfort.

I have a mate from North Carolina who is into his gridiron, I wouldn't want to take a hit off the dude with pads or not. He is half man half beast but a thoroughly nice lid.

1 Fans who watch a couple of games and are then experts on al hings football
2 people calling football soccer

I'm highly familiar with both sports. Nordecke is right. Statistics would back him up.
The rules of American Football are very different from Rugby. In rugby you generally tackle the player with the ball, in US football any player can be blocked.

Before the advent of the helmets and pads the amount of serious spinal injuries, paralysis from the neck down, that kind of thing was significant. Unfortunately the people that designed the safety pads and helmets were in a way too efficient. Anyone who is familiar with the concept of risk compensation will know that safety breakthroughs rarely drastically reduce injury and accident they just shift it elsewhere e.g drivers with ABS brakes statistically have as many accidents as drivers without because the driver inevitably takes more risks. Equally in American Football players wearing helmet and pads take far more risks and play more violently than they previously would, certainly more than any rugby player.

They are also bigger. When you've got a player that weighs 400 Ilbs and is 6ft6 crashing in full pelt into a player that weighs 180Ib and is 5ft 6 helmet to helmet straight on, you'll understand why American Football has one of the highest rates of serious injuries of any sport in the world. And the pads and helmets make it worse.

This notion of US footballers being nancy boys is a cultural prejudice nothing more.

Dangerous injuries happen in both sports, and there are lots of different ways to get injured, I don't buy it to be honest, certainly not the extent where American footballers are far more padded up than Rugby players. I'd also argue Rugby is a far more continuous sport. American football seems to start and stop very quickly.
