Pre-Season Friendly

It's the first pre-season friendly today with a home tie vs AZ Alkmaar. There will be this then 2 more friendlies before the first competitive game of the season in the cup at Sandhausen. The squad will be a mixture of pros and youth players as Marsch is without 12 players who were at the Euros as well as Brobbey who is still recovering from a hamstring in jury from May. Will be the first chance to see new signings Simakan and Szoboszlai on limited minutesa after recent injuries as well. Interesting to see what sort of formation Marsch plays and whether it's an indication of what he wants going forwards.

Got gulag’d so couldn’t report but the game ended 1-0 to RBL in the end which wasn’t so bad considering it was their first game and AZ’s 3rd or 4th I believe. You could see lots of the ideas Marsch is trying to bring back to the club but it’ll take time to change the way they play especially those bought under Nagelsmann.

Squad still extremely thin on pros with the Euro lot (minus Beni and Olmo) not back till Thursday so won’t be available for Friday’s friendly. 1st half was combative but bereft of quality with neither striker up to scratch and Szoboszlai very rusty. Simakan played well on his debut though and they finally didn’t put Adams at RB. 2nd half was a completely new XI with only Kampl as the senior pro and youth players plugging holes - even had a striker playing RB. Samardzic (likely to be loaned out) scored a nice goal.

Lookman, only back a few days, got 30 minutes but legit only touched the ball twice up front. Needs to try harder than that to impress.
 

Now heavily reported Maxence Lacroix will not be moving from Wolfsburg to RBL. Two initial bids (around €20m and €23m) were rejected a few weeks ago but seems Wolfsburg are adamant on €30m+ which they just will not pay. He's still linked with Chelsea and Spurs though who have more money.

I'm still of the opinion a new central defender isn't even a priority though and would prefer to see cover at both full-back positions.
 
Pre-Season Friendly #2

Second friendly of the Summer for Marsch's men with a home game against Montpellier. Seems there's a couple of casualties from the first friendly/training with neither Mo Simakan nor Szoboszlai making the squad. Another chance for Sorloth and Hwang to show their worth as the Euro players start to trickle back into training before the pre-season camp on Sunday. Willi Orban returns and is captain (I think he might end up captain in general this season) which is good to see.

Looks another 4-2-2-2 formation with youngster Bonnah at full-back with Mukiele in the middle of defense second game running. Not sure if this an experiment or just covering till everyone is back fit.

1-0 RBL

It’s already very evident just how different the football is going to be this season. Lots of quick forward balls and switches. LB Angelino smashes it right across to RB Mukiele who digs a little ball across the box for Sorloth to tuck away. Great stuff.
