Has to be at least mildly concerning that we only got 1 point from playing those 2 in that case though?

It’s too early to be looking at relegation and I agree that we’ve got enough to stay out of trouble, but I do find this complete dismissal of the idea a bit mad all things considered.
If you watched the game tonight, I'm sure you would agree, Forest have nothing about them at all and Villa are really little better. In fairness, we played Villa and Forest early in the season, when we were a completely different team and we should have had at least a point at Villa.

I did watch it and agree both teams were rubbish. If fans of those clubs watched our games with them and then our game last night they’d probably be saying the same about us, that’s why I find the dismissive attitude odd. As I said, I think we’ve got enough to stay out of trouble but until we start to pick up in terms of getting points on the board then I don’t see it as a foregone conclusion.

Imagine playing both of them but this time with a striker, and with a midfield. Both of which we didnt have last time and still managed to make it difficult.

Now throw in Leicester and Wolves and Southampton and its hard to see being lower than 15th barring a disaster, based on how the team has played since the window ended.

We were far better last night than either of those teams playing tonight were, we are probably going to finish between 14th and 10th, neither of the teams playing tonight will finish above 16th. The mood swings among fans on here are amazing, we beat Wolves and Southampton and we are going to get top 7, we lose, to a decent Utd. side, we are in a relegation battle. I think the truth is, we will neither finish in the top 7 or the bottom 6, we will continue to lose some and to win some and will once again strengthen in the summer.

Vault me, if I am wrong I will definitely admit it and accept that I am a poor judge of a team.

Fairly sound and balanced to me.

Can't believe this thread has 111 pages already.

You’re effectively agreeing with me only being more flippant about it so not sure why I’d vault you.

Somehow beat Spurs and we're equal with the 10-game tally we had in 2007/08. That turned out OK.

Ditto 2008/09, when we had a point fewer after nine games.

Literally the only positives I can pick out right now. So much of last season reared its head in the 1st half yesterday.

Worrying times.

Moyes pretty much always started seasons at a snails pace. 05/06 was a horrific start to the season (think it was 1 win up to middle of November) and 10/11 was poor aswell, think team were in bottom half well into February before a solid end of season gave the usual top 7 finish.

Just checked back and 05/06 had the grand total of two goals scored in first 9 games!

09/10 was a very strange first half aswell. Started getting thumped 6-1 at home to Arsenal and losing to newly promoted Burnley. Then reeled off 3 wins in 4 before not winning again until 28th Dec! Was one win in 12 but relegation was never seriously on the agenda as always a decent amount of draws to keep the points total ticking over which Lampard is adopting. Also were regularly in europa in those times so Thurs-Saturday dynamic was a big issue.

Finished 09/10 with 61 points in the end....

It's been encouraging to see Lampard building from the back, and concentrating on making the midfield combative. We're not going to score bucketfuls of goals, so solidity is paramount if we're going to stay out of trouble.

Agree with this. Unfortunately I think every game is going to be an absolute scrap for points - can’t see us having any comfortable 2/3 v nil home games.

At the same time (city possibly aside) I can see us being competitive in every game so you’d hope we have enough about us to grind out enough points.

Another attacker a must in January.
