At this stage of the season, given our position, there really isn't much room for optimism. By the same token, it's one thing to feel we are going down, but it's quite another to spend your entire weekend telling all and sundry multiple times that we are doomed.
We're in big trouble. But we were never going to go on a run of three wins and get out of it. It was clear - at least after the defeat to Fulham - that if we were to escape it would most likely be on the last day after an agonising ordeal. So, here we are.
In all likelihood, we need four points from the next two games. At some point, you've got to help yourself as a club and we need to win one of those next two games. The alternative is to continue to hope the slow bicycle race is something we can win. I fear, however, that even if Leeds don't pull off an unexpected win, Forest might. So, in the end, while it is possible Leeds and Forest don't win another game, we really cannot rely on that.
And if we can't win one of the next two, well, so be it. I'll always be an Evertonian, but fans need to have some pride in their team to make supporting more than simply a duty. To be enjoyable, fans need to see something elevating in their side that they can relate to, something to take joy and pleasure in. Right now, there is no joy, no pleasure, no pride in watching this team. It's rotten to the core.
So, if we do go, so be it. People can catastrophise all they like about liquidation and points deductions and half-built stadiums. But there is nothing we as individuals can do about any of that. So, no point worrying about it. Worry about the stuff we can influence. So, a big atmosphere on Thursday night to roar on our team. Let's see where it take us.
