I've thought about how we might look as a championship squad.

We'd have a very good backline at least. Pickford and Onana would be sold, I suspect Gana would be let go too due to wages and him not wanting to play in the championship. Doucoure will be let go too due to wages and desire. Aside from that, I think we'd be left with;

Begovic, Coleman, Patterson, Keane, Holgate, Branthwaite, Mykolenko, Tarkowski, Garner, Davies (sadly), Gray, McNeil, Calvert-Lewin, and Maupay. Add in the young lads as you say and we've got a half decent squad there (for the championship anyway). I'd expect us to come straight back up at the first time of asking, as the board will have all been hounded out and hopefully we'd be run semi-competently.
Gana will be almost 34 at the start of next season and could very well end up being our top earner, given what we're paying him to leave PSG. I wouldn't expect there to be a queue for him (maybe somewhere in the middle east but he may not want to go there). Would be typical Everton shambles if we are in the second division with a 34 year old we can't shift being top earner.

I would be very surprised if we came back up right away (Play Off spot maybe, then who knows). A lot of teams like us (and some better!) have gone down and spent years in a tough division, perhaps thinking they were "too good" not to bounce right back. Maybe Sunderland thought that and look how that went.

All comes down to how well-prepared and proactive the board are with planning and recruitment. That is the worrying bit. I wouldn't trust any of the current clowns to plan a piddle-up in a brewery never mind operate swiftly and effectively like a well-oiled machine in structuring the football club to excel in a league none of them really know anything about or have experience in (manager and DOF aside).

Home advantage too. The big concern I have with Brentford is they'll have a bit of a siege mentality because of Toney.

They wont sit back. We've scored 6 in two games against Brentford at Goodison in the last two games. I expect us to add another two on Saturday.

If we play like we have under Dyche so far at GP then we win this one. I think our players are familiarising themselves with Dycheball with every game. There's a lot of responsibility being taken.

You’re exaggerating some of this I think. Yes there is a massive revenue shortfall (100m plus) which sounds scary but there’s a 45m year one parachute payment, we are owed 25m for Moise Kean, and would likely bank about 70m from the sales of Pickford and Onana. Those two departures as well as Doucoure and Mina out of contract also represent about 20m a year in wages. All of which more than covers the revenue drop- although it would of course be prudent to ship out other high earning players, but it needn’t be a complete fire sale.

The key question is where our finances currently sit which is hard to know when we don’t know results for 21/22 yet, but I’ve seen Esk project with the Gordon sale we could be close to break even this season which would be a significant help when it comes to FFP, whichever division we end up in.

Suppose I am slightly exaggerating it re: a complete fire sale, but to get back to a more sustainable position in terms of annual profit and loss long term, that is what is required, particularly when you consider we'll need to make fairly significant acquisitions to get back out of the Championship (or hope Thelwell and Dyche can operate in a savvy manner, which to be fair, I think both of them have demonstrated they can do in terms of return on money spent).

We'll get the accounts in a few weeks (or we should do, they're meant to go to Companies House) which should cast more light on the subject, but that again brings me back to the prior conclusion, which is it isn't really worth discussing the finances until we have more information (either that we're going down, staying up, or that we have the published annual accounts)

I actually believe the board don’t think we will go down.

I am sure they absolutely believe we'll be fine and all will magically be ok. It's exactly why they didn't prioritize a striker in the summer despite losing Richy's goals and our regular sicknote striker being out injured before the season started. It's also exactly why they didn't bring anyone in in the winter window despite selling another attacking player in Gordon.

If we stay up it will be in spite of the board, not because of them, yet you know full well they'll be saying "we never had any doubt, look how brilliant we are for getting Dyche and not panic buying unnecessary players". Their delusion, dysfunction, incompetence and negligence have put the club on the brink again and they'll have you believe there's nothing to worry about.

Agree that the final point is the biggest one. We could well do a Sunderland or Portsmouth if we continue to be run so poorly. Get some competent people in and I'd trust Dyche to do the rest.

I actually think Gana and Doucoure might stay. Guaranteed first team football and the prospect of bouncing back and playing at BMD. But can the club afford players like that if they do decide to stay and don't have relegation clauses?

I think we have a championship ready squad. A couple of contracts expire and 3 or 4 will be in demand but the majority of what we have is a good championship squad

Never in a million years did anyone think relegation would be on the cards when a free-spending billionaire owner finally rocked up, so I highly doubt many of the players have relegation wage drop clauses. Maybe a few from the last year or two, but it wont be many. I'm sure a part of the funds raised from the sales of the likes of Pickford and Onana will be used to cover any high earners who don't move on, plus there's the likes of Dacs and Begovic and Townsend and Davies and Mina who will be out of contract anyway to further free up the wage bill.

Central midfield could be a problem. Douc and Davies out of contract, Onana likely to be in demand with Iwobi and Gana possibly having options too. James Garner would probably become a regular if he can stay fit

Goodison has to be in full bear pit mode for that game. Same as it was for Leeds. For some reason though there was an air of expectation for the Villa game that turned into frustration that we weren’t winning straight away. We have to treat every home game like we did the Chelsea United Palace games last season.

Yeah no doubt we'll have to recruit one or two, otherwise we'll be eyeing up a deadline day loan move for Allan from Al-Kebab or wherever he's at now.
