You've got to say, if there was a university course on football club ownership, the last 6 years of Everton Football Club would be a case study in how not to do it.

There's barely a person at the club who doesn't thoroughly deserve the relegation they're likely to get. The sad thing is the one group who don't deserve it are the fans.
Catering staff and groundkeepers too... could end up getting a pay cut or laid off while the players sit out their contracts on a fat wedge
But ya know, as Bill said; 'How would Everton do it?'

This. No idea why some people think we’re going to bounce straight back and have a fun little frolic in the Championship with the club’s finances in the state they’re in. I would be astonished if we didn’t start next season with at least a 12 point deduction if we were to go down.

Is that how the rules work though ?

Can the football league impose penalties based on spending and profit/loss when the team were not under their jurisdiction ? I’m not sure they can.

Lets hope you're right and it gives extra incentive to get straight back up if we drop
We could yo-yo for years avoiding punishment

At a guess I'd say they're unlikely to have their pay cut, purely because those salaries will be inconsequential to the overall running costs.

Just seem to remember that Newcastle could apparently spend loads in the next window without direct punishment as they had only just rejoined the PL.

Could be wrong

Newcastle have never been in breach of profit/loss regulations in either the PL or football league. Ashley ran them the way he did for that reason, so they’d be financially stable to come straight back up and they did it twice. It’s essentially how the likes of Norwich and West Brom are run as well.

Think you’ve missed my point. The argument in the media was that Newcastle can spend shed loads over the next window plus Jan because the profit and loss rules are based on historic spending.

I just looked up the regulations for EFL and it would be calculated over a three year period including time spent in the prem...so the permitted losses would be aggregated losses depending on the time spent in both leagues.
In either case we would need a major shipping out of playing staff to cut costs
