Request for a current affairs forum

I appreciate that this is first and foremost an Everton related football forum, however I'm sure there's enough interest in having a current affairs forum under the GOT umbrella.

Save getting the Ale House clogged up with endless political arguments subsequently deleted - a dedicated forum, I'll even offer to moderate it :o

Mods, owners, debt-holders etc what's the view?

Yea, but it's a bit more sensitive tbf, i've seen some members providing heartfelt anecdotal evidence, only to have the p1ss ripped for 12hours, and the whole thread get deleted, and with it all the effort that contributors have made.

Totally understand that politics and current affairs are a little more sensitive and serious when compared to other things.

But that's why the mods and owners prefer talk about that to be done elsewhere isn't it?

Not because it's sensitive, per se, but because they anticipate that some members will not respect the sensitivity, and the quantity and quality of moderation it requires (imo). I believe it would just be required initially, and that posters would then get used to it.
Anyway, thanks so far to Bruce and Groucho, who seem to be doing most of the difficult grunt work on this.

This makes sense.

I really have no idea why I'm in here. I guess it's because it's been denied and don't get why people are still on about it.

Unfortunately, some threads will lead to politics being discussed. Whether that is a thread about Hillsborough, the Boston Marathon, unemployment or whether there really has been 1 million jobs 'created' by this government. or any current issue that a poster opens a thread on the Everything else forum. Opinions on theses and other issues will be made which will invariably lead to people saying 'this person is this and that' and 'this or that should happen to them'. Isn't that 'political' ?

What someone asked for was a specific Current Affairs forum so as the Everything else forum does not get clogged up. A reasonable request I would have thought, so as to accommodate those that want to talk about current affairs with other blues. You cannot choose the people you work with no more than you can choose the people who support the club you support.

I would have thought that debating with other blues that choose to enter the debate would be something that would be welcomed. Those that don't want to debate do not have to post their opinions no one is forcing them to.

It's being humoured atm I believe. We are after all 'current affair' animals, to paraphrase Aristotle

It was a reasonable request. Totally understand that.

But it was turned down.

If the wrestling thread had been deleted or not allowed I'd have left it at that.

As someone that's been here pretty much from the start, the issue of politics has come up regularly. From a moderating perspective, the only real issue with it is when it causes people to fall out over it. If folks could discuss things sensibly then I doubt there would be much objection from the mod team. I mean Mr the Esk and I have very different political leanings, as indeed do Chico and I, but I like to think we can respect each other nonetheless.

Not that hard is it?

Further to what Bruce has said, we do try to apply common sense as much as possible.

The problem comes when someone puts a view across that is contrary to another's view, and rather than argue it out, what ensues is a deluge of 'yer mars' and asterisks.

Often, the problem is not with the views expressed, but the way in which they're expressed.

Forgive me if I missed it but it wasn't 'turned' down. The OP said Interesting responses from all concerned - I'm a little disappointed to be honest, but as there's no great enthusiasm or willingness to trial an area for mature discussion of current affairs I've more than enough to do elsewhere to push it.

Let's file it in "no further action required". Then it was suggested by the admin that it may be trialed in the 'forum supporters area'.

Ah, this debate again.

We can't facilitate it - we've tried in the past and it just doesn't work.

The default position for moderators is

... all are always at the discretion of a moderator and we'll always look to apply common sense as to what can run it's course with a close eye, and what can't.

This is the thing. Esk brought up a good point, and not picking on anyone specifically, it's gone to the dogs within a couple of pages.

If it was trialled, I'd say the forum supporters area would be the best place to test.

Forgive me if I am wrong but there seems to be a bit of a difference between the two.

One says 'we can't facilitate it' and the other says, 'IF it was trialed, I'd say the forum supporters area'.

I think we should trial it.
