Request for a current affairs forum

I appreciate that this is first and foremost an Everton related football forum, however I'm sure there's enough interest in having a current affairs forum under the GOT umbrella.

Save getting the Ale House clogged up with endless political arguments subsequently deleted - a dedicated forum, I'll even offer to moderate it :o

Mods, owners, debt-holders etc what's the view?

It's one thing not participating in a thread because you have no interest in the area of discussion, there are many threads I never ever look at for that reason.

But what I do not understand is why posters have to enter a thread that they have either objected to in the past (fair enough) or have no interest in and then try to de-rail it with content that is not out of place in a primary school playground.

Can someone please explain the logic for this? Because frankly I wonder whether it is worth staying here if this is the level of "conversation".

This is quite common really. They come on to stop politics or current affairs being discussed because of their own politics. No one forces them to participate but they do. They want a particular thread closed down so they complain or throw insults. That way they get it obliterated from the forum. Sad really.

Amen. There are plenty of threads for the goofier side of life. Doesn't seem too much to hope for some on the more serious side. Can't see why the two can't cohabit happily alongside each other.

As it is, it's a bit like a rampant feminist going into some of the fit women threads and complaining all the time. Much better just to not bother going in if it's not your thing.

Ask a cognitive psychologist for a conjecture MtE. It's just banter, let it ride, and maybe involve the mod's if it goes too far.
Worst thing for me is trawling through a thread/emails on a mobile to discover several posts are spurious. Waste of time.
Saying that, we shouldn't be intolerant of an occasional joke imo :)

Hahaha, you reminded me of a Tory policy to employ a student on a sebatical(?) At good uni's who was instructed to stifle legitimate debate.

But that's like tellling me what to do when you have no right.

The site owner has no to a 'Current Affairs' forum but yet it's still being discussed. I just wondered why.

You're right, I do have little to no interest in current affairs/politics, but I do have great interest in this forum as a whole.

And this is a great post. You think there isn't derailing or banter in my wrestling thread? Of course there is. But it's a football forum. Of course this is going to happen.

As someone that's been here pretty much from the start, the issue of politics has come up regularly. From a moderating perspective, the only real issue with it is when it causes people to fall out over it. If folks could discuss things sensibly then I doubt there would be much objection from the mod team. I mean Mr the Esk and I have very different political leanings, as indeed do Chico and I, but I like to think we can respect each other nonetheless.

Not that hard is it?

Very odd response really.

I suppose that's the crux, is it a football forum, or forum for football fans mate ?
If the former, even wrestling's out.
The issue with current affairs here, as I perceive it, is the degree of moderation that may be required, and the new (abhorrent) legislation, that expects an isp to behave like it's a publisher along the same lines as the Time's in the '80's or earlier, leaving site owners open to being banned for things like slander, deformation, etc....

Well it's a bit of both isn't it really?

I'll use the wrestling forum as an example. Obviously it's understood that not everyone on a football forum will like or follow wrestling. If we wanted purely wrestling we'd go to a wrestling forum. People come into the wrestling thread and talk about it being 'fake' and it be 'guys in their pants', etc... etc... you know. But you'd expect that on a football forum wouldn't you?

Current affairs/politics is slightly different I guess, as i'd imagine there are strong opposing views quite a lot of the time. But of course a thread about it is going to be derailed, or have banter in it. There's no way round that. Especially on here!

Still haven't seen that thread yet Ijjy.

Half the reason threads like these get closed is because of off-topic bollocks that prove this site isn't mature enough to keep them open, hence why they're banned in the first place.

If the authorities wanted they could easily get all ISP's done for slander and deformation at any time. It could be similar to having a discussion on a Golf, Rugby League or Wrestling forum and a poster says 'this person is crap' or 'that person is a thug'. Could not that be deemed as slander or deformation without any firm evidence? For instance take the Suarez bite. If there is a momentum on forums to get him 10 games and the FA give him 10 games would LFC be within their rights to attempt to get forums banned for 'deformation of character'? Couldn't Suarez issue a private prosecution against a forum because 'they contributed to restraint of trade?

Would a club risk such publicity?

Yes it might be different with the government. They take a forum to court because on that forum some people are discussing the government and are not saying things that are not favourable to said government. That could apply to any forum including the Telegraph that has people ****ging off the government.

This government and the previous would like nothing better than to stifle debate.
