Richarlison at Spurs

Just been reading the latest FourFourTwo magazine and they have an interview with him. He talks to Brazil journalist so more open than he would be to any UK one (through a translator). Some very interesting answers. It's behind a paywall these days so thought I'd type out the Everton Q&As:

How difficult was it to leave Everton?

It's always a tough call when you have such strong connections with your club and that was definitely the case for me. I was happy at Everton and I'm grateful for everything I learned there. It's a big club with a lot of history. However, perhaps they're suffering with lack of ambition nowadays. You know, that eagerness to win matches and trophies. I spent four years there and I could see there was still a very long way to go to achieve big things.

What moment during 21/22 was the most stressful for you?

The away match v Burnley. They were a direct opponent in the relegation battle and we were leading 2-1 at half time- then they scored two goals and we lost. Things got a bit stressful in the dressing room after final whistle- you know, guys arguing with each other. Some coaches were also looking very nervous. There was basically a feeling of desperation; nobody could really see anything positive. It's a huge relief to look back and think we were able to escape from that bad situation.

You scored the goal that secured Everton a vital win over Chelsea in early May. How important was that moment for you?

There's a funny story about that match. I'd put in some awful performances in training during the week- I was suffering with pains in my ankle and knee. I still started the match but two hours before kick off, Frank Lampard admitted in front of the whole squad I shouldn't be involved in the match. At the exact moment he said it, I was distracted-honestly- and didn't get the message. Then I went on the pitch and smashed it!

You scored as Everton came from 2-0 down to beat Crystal Palace and confirm safety. That must have felt pretty special?

In the week leading up to that match I left a training session early with a thigh injury. I couldn't walk and the doctor helped me to get off the pitch. The scan showed a grade 2 injury. I started praying to God and took medicines to try to recover in time. I took around 10 anti-inflammatory pills until the game came and then an injection. I was injured but couldn't miss a key game. Somehow I managed to recover. If you look back at celebrations for the third goal, I dived on the grass because I couldn't run to celebrate with my team mates- my legs couldn't move anymore. The sacrifice proved my love and gratitude for Everton. It was an unbelievable night.

Wow. Top guy.

That makes me feel sad.
Spot on, though. Kenwright has sapped any ambition from the club. Moshiri has been happy to leave him in his role as a lightning rod for the fans' ire. Their running of the club has been criminal.

Hopefully we are moving in the right direction now, but I don't think we are anywhere near competing for trophies. Maybe in 5 years...

Interesting comments about the Burnley aftermath. It was around that time that you could really start to tell that Lampard was getting stressed out. No wonder they were all so cathartic after Palace.

I think that was the time they (squad) all properly start looking at the table. Before Burnley there was still a complacency especially on here with people saying Burnley weren't going to win another game and would finish on about 25 points! People were certainly saying back then you could stay up no problem on 32-33 points. And in aftermath of losing to Burnley it went the other way and posters were saying team would just plummet and finish bottom of the league.

So in those circumstances pretty good then to come back out that Saturday lunchtime and with largely same 11 beat Man. United 1-0 (even if that was the worst Man. United team with mentality for over 30 years) and get things going again.

As much as I respect Richi for playing through injuries when others wouldn't, it was a stroke of luck the world cup wasn't held in summer as I can't believe he'd have played the Palace match if Brazil were playing their first game in three weeks. He mentioned at end of interview he has Jules Rimet trophy as his screensaver so it's a huge ambition for him.

It was. Yes he's a big game player now , he scores very important goals and can carry a team

We haven't necessarily improved his natural talents but he's certainly developed into a winner, weirdly playing for a club that just loses.
He is a good player but he underachieved for long spells. Not sure he will be missed long term. Good luck to him.
