The members of the public who were petrified in their neighborhoods, the small business owners who had their shops destroyed and the various workers currently not in work until their place of work is closed due to damage would disagree with you there.

Hang them.
 
The annoying thing is, the career criminals that looted - and probably looted more than most - won't be caught.

It'll be the idiotic, opportunistic cretins that will get lumbered with overlong prison sentences, careers and futures ruined for the sake of grabbing the new Call of Duty.

Not saying they should get away with it either like.

To be fair though mate without defending any rioters at least the first two were actually protesting an issue however it may have spiralled and hijacked by idiots. Apart from a few initially reacting to the London shooting this was crime, pure and simple.

In a major part it was. Lets see how long it takes the Duggan executioners to come to 'justice'. I wonder if it will be a stretch of time like the Menezes killers and Tomlinson killers.

There are legitimate targets but for the most part these aren't being attacked - although my heart was warmed to see a Ladbrokes smashed in. Unfortunately its small businesses that are getting it - I imagine the police would go like **** if people tried to raid a tescos. Scenes of muggings are bitterly disappointed but then these aren't revolutionaries - just an angry poor isolated and much abused section of the community - round here it was a majority of young blacks and stop and search ignited it.

So villify these people all you want and perhaps for the most part they deserve it. But they are a symptom of a disease. The real disease is poverty, inequality and you must look to politicians, corporations, media oligarchs and the kind of scurrilous media that supports the false agenda's and propaganda, demonising the poor and the vulnerable rather than pointing the blame to the rich and the powerful. If there hadn't been such a land grab by the richest strata in society recently, causing a recession and cuts its doubtful any of this would happen.

The more these riots continue, the greater the chance at society breaking down; and even though I live in the middle of these areas (right in hackney - burning cars at the end of my street, I watched part of it frm my window) I can't help want to see that because our democracy is a complete joke.

As I said im not defending anyone but I see this as sheer criminality and think we need much tougher sentencing for most offences anyway.

Really getting the right wing empathy here. Stop and searched ten times a year, 50 people trying for 1 job. Drugs, prostitution and worse blighting communities that are being systematically denied access to things they previously relied on.

When you have several generations of this, you combine it with the breakdown of families, generations of unemployed, absent fathers and poor role models and you get a moral vaccum that perpetuates this stuff.

I don't believe kids are intrinsically bad or evil.

If there was more equality, if business weren't suffering under corporate advances, there'd be more local jobs anyway. If corporations weren't dodging 85 billion in tax a year (10 times the figure that benefit fraud accrues) perhaps something could be done to facilitate these people into becoming the kind of content citizens we all want them to be.

Alternatively hire more police and lock them up. It will cost 30k a year to do so (thereby ironically wasting your money because it would of been cheaper to give them all 30k a year to do something constructive like build a high speed rail network or low cost housing).

Still I've not read the times yet. I'm gonna wait until Rupert Murdoch can tell me what to think.

page 43. Some great stuff. As fr as page 42 no one has yet mentioned Duggan didn't shoot at anyone. Just like Tomlinson didnt attack or obstruct anyone, just like Menezes didnt have a puffer jacket full of semtex on. Still. "Ban Him FFS".
