There's been loads of pathetic performances under him, where we've just given up as soon as the first goal was conceded. As well as the two games mentioned above, 3-0 v Southampton, 4-0 v Liverpool, 2-0 Arsenal the other week, 3-0 United this season, 2-0 Arsenal away last season, 3-0 Swansea in the cup. There's zero fight in this team, none at all, it's humiliating. We always at least competed under Moyes, even if we were playing for a 0-0 draw sometimes
well that's not entirely true now is it. Moyes seemed happy getting beat 1-0 at the big clubs. I can remember one game at man Utd in particular. Also we came from behind to beat west brom this season and should have closed out plenty of other games. There certainly is fight from some of the players it's just our manager is a colossal egotist fraud

Then why has Baines not come out to question the press, for in that scenario ultimately it is they who are wrong with the interpretation?

If I had been misrepresented to a point whereby it may be seen as a criticism by my manager, I would be disgruntled with the press.

Instead, it has been Baines who has been asked to apologise whereas the press have not been criticised by Martinez. Do you not find that strange?

Hence why the majority of people see this as an act of censure for reasons that have nothing to do with any misinterpretation.

Add to the fact that the Echo, so often criticised by our fan own based for being overly pro-club, now seem to be readying their ammunition.
The press have clearly been criticised. They are defending themselves so how can they not have been.
We've been told Baines apologised but it was in answer to a question. A statement hasn't been volunteered about the situation.
And again why should Baines put himself in the firing line by blaming the press. He's a good professional. He won't have wanted the attention this has brought.

I am sure Leighton Baines didn't just decide to say what he said in the spare of the moment. I would like to think a player of his standing can go to the manager and discuss such things. If he is ignored then there is an issue, if he feels he cannot go to the manager with such issues then there is an issue.
I read what Baines had to say, it is critical of the management of the players, However it is not a very serious criticism. When we can't seem to beat anyone outside the bottom 3 I think criticising the chemistry between players is not the worst thing he could have said.
Just a thought, when a player as professional as Baines feels he has to speak to the papers things are not good.

A good post and spot on about the "lack of fight" but we did not always compete under Moyes.

There was a game at Bolton not long before he left and I have never seen the travelling Blues so angry.

Then there was the Anfield weakened team fiasco......and the Wigan cup tie.

Those are just examples of the top of my head.

I think it was their interview which other outlets republished

Yes but think the storm in the teacup is in relation to some of the headlines used. The Echo were the best of a bad bunch, and probably can't be accused of using a slightly misleading headline. Don't think Martinez has said anything about them particuarly. Unless something has been said off the record like.....

Baines hasn't said a word about being misrepresented from the itnerview mate, that was all Martinez saying it, also yes he may have apologised to Martinez - we just have Bobbies word for that like - and he has shown himself to be a bit deluded lately

Do agree with one thing though - Baines is a good Professional - which is why what Martinez did today in his presser was an act utterly disgraceful and a sign of an utter coward trying to do everything he can to save his nice 50k pw pay check.

The thing is if he pulls the finger out and we start picking up points and climbing the table in the last few games I'll be fuming even more.

I'm aware of that mate, I spent many years 'in' the confines & dusty catacombs of that particular 'industry'...so yes, that's as maybe, but here's the thing...

...a headline without the body content is what it is, it's simply a 'shout' and a bit of a flag wave really...it's a big, eff-off 'Coooey - LOOK AT ME'.

But there IS content here and the source is an interesting/appealing one because of who it is; namely a well-respected, long-serving, popular and well-liked pro, one who is not renowned for boat-rocking or palaver. He is also a player - if you recall, sure you do - who could have 'offed' on us numerous times if he so wished. Didn't...and that's why a stir has been caused IMO. In short - the boy's a blue...

Whatever slant people take on the comments is up to them, and it's also irrelevant as to what the true meaning or motivation was behind them now as well because it's out there now innits... it's carrion to be picked at, chewed over & spat toward the manager.

So, after viewing the presser I feel he handled it appallingly. He could have done so much better with it.

My view on the comments, for what it's worth, is that they're very honest and very telling. I also expect that - yes - LEIGHTON has indeed apologised for them but only in the sense that they - so to speak - gained legs and have become a 'thing'.

On the flip-side I would also imagine he has integrity enough to stand by every word he has said because, clearly, that's how he feels.

And he's not the only one.

The ECHO have (finally) found their albondigas and reacted to this (via the article this avvy) because RM has questioned, oddly, the source and the bend of their copy. Foolish indeed because all is provable, as would be the context I feel.

Trying times indeed for BOB and he's done himself no favours at all this morning.

I now wouldn't be remotely surprised to see him jibbed sooner rather than later. His time, after the last few days, seems very borrowed indeed.

Still, stranger things an' all that...

Are albondigas what I think they are ?

And surely the point is that the content was fine. If discussed and reported how it was said then there would have been little sensation. Just a good interview with an articulate player who was talking about how the team can improve.
It was made into an issue by the tone which plenty of people picked up on without reading his actual words.
I'm happy and agree with what he said. And I don't see it as a criticism of anyone in particular just a determination to work harder.
Sadly that's not what we got and that's obviously why he chose to apologise. Martinez didn't even say he felt he needed to. Just generally explained why he did.
It wasn't a brilliant press conference but it was hardly an attack on Baines.

He doesn't have to say it. It happened. And why would the club put him in a situation where he had to say something to the press

The press have clearly been criticised. They are defending themselves so how can they not have been.

Where have they (the Echo) been criticised? They are rightly defending their article as it implies that their interpretation is in fact wrong or false.

All I've heard and read was an emphasis on Baines and his responsibility. "Leighton Baines knows he has to take responsibility for those words..."

"...and obviously for that he has apologised and taken responsibility for that for leaving those words open..."

"... we expect him to take responsibility, to make sure that we speak on the pitch and the way to do that is against Watford."

Again, if it was the Echo and other members of the press who've made the interpretation then the emphasis should have been on them.

Instead, the focus was on Leighton and his actions as I could see very little evidence that Martinez was instead aiming it at the press.

Baines may not want to put himself in the firing line, but if I were Leighton I don't think I'd be too pleased with Martinez's comments.

Nor would I be happy being misrepresented. Therefore, if it were the press who were to blame then surely he'd want to clarify that.
