Yeah, I can see what you mean there mate. I am not anti-Martinez. I actually like the guy. I am just finding it difficult to believe that he is going to change his 'philosophy'. If I am honest, I don't think he is a million miles from getting it right - but he has never been more than a million miles from getting it right. That's the worry. He isn't getting any closer to getting it right. It might appear like that some days, but then it just goes back to what we thought it was.

That post sums up exactly how I feel too. I've been so patient with him because I don't think it would take much for us to shoot up the table and be a real threat 'if he could address the defensive issues' and give us more balance. Like you said though, he's had quite a bit of time to address it yet we still seem to be suffering from the same problems.

I don't think there's much different between the views of a lot of posters who are both pro and anti RM. I just think the pro RM are more patient than the anti RM.

RM has done a lot of things right but needs to give our team some steel and quickly if he wants to stay. I hope he does but I'm starting to have my doubts that he will.

That's the crux of it though. Have we seen anything in him that he can do this. Not the odd couple of games but on a consistent basis like his first season when someone else was drilling it. This is his problem where it's his way and his way only. I don't even think he'd entertain the thought of getting a new coach in as he believes he doesn't need it. I think he'd walk if it was ever forced on him.
I'd have happily agreed with you even the season before last when my main worry was that he was a fundamentalist who believed in systems more than the players but to be honest that is where he's won me round at least for the time being. I think he's brought players in for the right reasons and started to adapt to others strengths. I still think we need to see organisers emerge on the pitch but you'd hear that from a lot of clubs. Look how much Kompany not being there changes City

72 points mate, not 5th. 5th is nowhere. Always has been and always will be. 72 points is AN EVERTON PREMIER LEAGUE POINTS RECORD.

Yay the 72 points personal premiere league record trophy. NSNO.

But in seriousness that was a good achievement of course. I know Moyes is the devil and Martinez is god so I know your not going to give the steam of your urine to the notion Martinez's 1st season was a perfect storm of Moyes' defensive drills and a dash of Martinez gun-ho approach.

But as another season passes it's looking like it's a very reasonable explanation.

It really wasn't. He replaced Lennon with a player who was meant to fill a similar position but with fresher legs and be an outlet ball while stopping their defence moving ten yards forward and squeezing the play.

It wasn't the reason we got beat. Hysteria picked up on in in hindsight mate.

If it doesn't fit, you must acquit.

When you look at his premier league track record you wonder why he's at Everton. I know he won the Fa cup but it is a once off knockout competition, he did relegate a team a week later like.

Palace, Reading, West Ham etc are likely to be in the the glorious semi final, ye know that final stage we are already in somehow. It's not a mind blowing suggestion they could end up winning it if things workout. Does that mean we take thier manager next season? Sure they wouldn't have even relegated anybody.

Only if they are getting drilled on being better at crosses. If they are and they are simply ignoring instructions then Bobby has lost them and needs to go. If they are not getting drilled then it can't be the players fault.
If we go down the blaming players route why would we need a manager? If it's always something else at fault why do we need one at all. The buck has to stop somewhere. He coaches them all week, sets tactics and picks team. Then there are decisions he makes during a game. All of these are down to the manager and the manager alone. He wanted total control of the playing side of the club and he got it. It's now his fault if it's not working.

I imagine that Roberto thinks that, if we keep possession and win it back quickly when we lose it, that teams will have very few opportunities to create chances against us. It doesn't take into account set pieces and counter attacks though. The received wisdom is that you should always have one more player on the cover than the opposition but we very often leave ourselves 2v2 and they're quicker to get forward than we are to get back.

Traditionally one fullback would stay in position when the other one went forward but we send both forward at the same time.

I admire that Martinez wants to dominate the opposition and play entertaining, attacking football but I think he will need to strike a better balance. He is tactically aware and he has already conceded to playing quicker balls forward to Lukaku, so I don't see why he shouldn't compromise here too.

Stones only considered leaving when the league champions made it clear how much they wanted him. None of our key players sought a move just to get away from Goodison as far as we're aware.

Roberto had to do a lot of ground work to persuade Lukaku and Deulofeu to join us and he made Stones and Barkley key to his plans. He's very well-liked. If we replaced him with someone who couldn't strike up that same kind of relationship or who wanted to get short-term results with more senior players then our starlets could become disillusioned.
You didn't really answer my question though now did you?

No it's not. It just means we have to fix our defensive third through personnel or tactics and we should have a very dangerous team.

It doesn't show that though. We've only had one season where we've shown an ability to attack and defend properly in the one game. Sporadic decent performances aren't good enough.

The personnel at the back are high quality internationals who've been valued in the 10's of millions. Two seasons of piss poor defending and bizarre decisions is well enough.

How are we better than last season dude.
We have had no europe,a better squad and are worse off in the league.
If you don't want to see him getting grief stay off the forum mr header.
Its all about opinions and its been going on for 2 years with coco with both camps having their say.

You just have to watch the team play to see they are better than last year. Its clear as night and day.

The situation position and points wise aint much better but the performances are much better.

Very clear to see.

Its results though that matter mate.
Yes we play some nicer stuff but we are still not winning and thats the crux.
I am on the fence about roberto mr header you know that

I spent a period on the fence, quite a long time actually....

Then, as tipping point, I recalled that BOB had once declared it a travesty that TITUS BRAMBLE wasn't in the ENGLAND squad.

Sort of sent me over that did.

We didn't even defend particularly well in his first season. I seem to remeber us always winning in the last 10 minutes when we were behind.

There were signs of what's happening this season when we played Newcastle at Goodison, 3 nil up at HT and cruising, scraped a 3-2 win in the end.

I don't think it's we are bad at defending crosses, I think we are defending too many crosses because we don't shut wide players down. How many crosses do people put in against us? I mean Mori and Jags are pretty good in the air?

If we ever had a great chance of doing something special, this year was our year and we've royally blown it. We are kidding ourselves if we think we're going to beat chelsea at home. And I think we'll struggle get in the top 10.
