Back to the usual wumming in here now instead of the other thread then.

On topic - 90% Out, up from 75% last week. 10% In, which is dependent on us progressing in the cup.

Suppose I'm still clinging to the Fence of Hope by my fingernails then but not too optimistic that I can hang on much longer.

Here's a scenario I've just made up (bit of fun, fume at it if you have to).

The Everton board are rocked by the 14/15 season. They have huge talents like Barkley and Stones and the premier league is finally in a state of open turmoil after Ferguson's resignation and Ciry keeping a big side out the top 4 every year. Despite this we are in a relegation battle and finish bottom half. Kenwright has watched Moyes control everything for 11 years on a low bet spend, now suddenly players aren't happy and are making it vocal, 30 mill was spent on a striker and we went backwards.

Kenwright being the man he is though decides to give Roberto the benefit of the doubt. The 15/16 season starts but the old habits creep in. There's fan discontent at the board that Roberto's failings are antagonising, there's fan discontent at the manager in unprecedented never before seen levels, we're still bottom half despite a number of new players coming in. The defence is getting worse and player unrest is in the air again.

Kenwright is watching all this in shock but is also working on the investment deal with Moshiri. Can he really hand over Everton to this new combo of manager and owner?

Not knowing what to do he puts in a phonecall to his best friend in football. They never stopped talking. 'David what do I do?'. Suddenly Moyes is available though. The job at Villa, turned down. West Ham, turned down. Swansea, turned down. Sunderland, turned down. Newcastle, turned down. Moyes openly admits though that he's turning down offers from Europe as he eyes a return to the premier league, but at what club? Baines Jags Mirallas are on the phone to him 'what's happened to our form gaffer'. And then in a few rare to interviews he starts dropping subtle references 'Everton would be a great club to go back to'.

Moshiri wants a manager popular with the fans to cement his new ownership and restore solid league form. He's no expert in managerial hiring from his time at Arsenal so leaves it to Bill.

He makes one final call on the last day of the 15/16 season after an embarassing finish of 13th. 'Please come home David', 'Aye Chairman'.

Think about it. Think about it. It could happen.

Put the crack pipe down please.

His greatest legacy for us was to stamp us as a long ball team...something that this manager has had to struggle to break down with playing staff and many supporters who grew fond of their hoofball.
Your post explains why Arteta suffers with an incurable neck complaint watching all those balls sail over his head

. 5th or midtable is the same difference as far as I'm concerned.

Surely as a new investor you want to enhance your investment. There are many ways to do this and one will be to try and increase the commercial revenues. In order to do that you need a product to sell. European football enhances your brand and your product as it reaches different audiences. It gives you more leverage when looking for better deals.

All players want to play European football. Granted it's Champions League first but European football is where players gain experience and improve as a player. Hodgson said this on the radio the other day.

Fans want European football. I am jealous of the Spurs fans in Dortmund today. OK they got tonked after a weird team selection but those trips are what it's all about. We've had a taste and I personally want more.

If you finish 5th you've done better than 15 other teams and only behind 4. That makes it much easier to persuade players to sign for you and to show people how close you were.

Saved us > near killed us > saddled us with hoofball > walked away > stabbed us in the back.

I think that's a fair summary of the sequence of events.

Moyes saved this club. Before he came we were on the verge of being relegated virtually every year. He gave us back our self respect, signed some great players despite receiving very little financial backing and generally over performed in terms of net spend and wages. We also played some terrific football at times with players like Pienaar, Baines and Arteta being a joy to watch. The last few years were a bit tired, we hit a plateua and didn't seem to be able to push on but we were still finishing top 8. Denying this makes you look like a WUM.

Fair enough if you support Martinez but it is essentially a massive leap of faith which is not supported by any evidence. Are you really saying that if we had the opportunity to get a top manager like Ancelloti or Mourinho in over the summer and give them £100m to spend you would prefer to stick with Martinez?

There are many differences between finishing 5th and midtable, but to name a few:

(1) attract better calibre of players
(2) instil more confidence in existing squad that team is progressing
(3) give the fans a feeling that we're capable of competing with the best teams in the league
(4) extra £6m would be nice

I literally don't know what you're talking about.

It could happen, I just hope it doesnt

Why has this always got to turn to a discussion of Moyes v. Martinez? Different managerial styles and limitations both with an entirely different set of financial situations and expectations of success.

While other clubs outside the top four made do and mend with worse.
