Surely he's still a better option on the left wing than Kone, Cleverly or the unproven Niasse
not when I've seen him play there... usually it's Lennon that gets moved over there so why make our most in form player less effective to accommodate someone else in his position? Imagine the fumes on here if he did that

Baines couldn't get forward as much as he does now if Del was there, and he's not getting forward enough as it is. Bobby is trying to get Baines back into the game by playing him with the Clev, trying to get a Baines/Pienaar thing going it's not working with anyone at the moment.

I can't think of a better squad we have had. I think Martinez must shoulder the responsibility of our league position. We have genuine quality all over the pitch and on the bench. When have we had that before?
We can have Mirallas, Besic, Deulofeu and one of our most expensive ever signings sat waiting to get games, whilst some genuinely exciting players go out and fail to win on a regular basis. We could have Ronaldo, Messi, Bale and Suarez but I suspect we would still lose plenty of games.
There is a massive problem, but its not the quality of the squad.
I was playing devils advocate when suggesting it might not be.

I agree he has the best for a while (maybe not 30 years) but now doesn't know what to do with it.

Just looking at the defence ONLY...

Coleman -- Frequently out of position
Jagielka - No leadership and has been saved by Mori
Mori -- If he cuts out basic errors our best defender
Stones - top notch but had a bad run of form
Baines -- See Coleman
Oviedo -- Ok all rounder

We looked more solid with Browning/Galloway at full back (obviously) and our game now isnt solely focused on attacking full backs...we need actual defenders who can pass the ball....we have Mori and Stones...

We need to improve here and make signings to fit the system.

Hey Zat - why do you think the full backs are as you say "frequently out of position "?
Do you not think it is how our manager sets the team up and tells them where to play?
Just a thought like

Our most resolute performances have come with Jags at the back. You have some mad obsession with players under 25. If Martinez gets his way and replaces all of Moyes back 4 we will likely flirting with relegation. If Mori cuts out basic errors, if Stones cuts out basic errors. Do you honestly think he can coach a decent defence? I will conceed that Jagielka's distribution is poor, and doesn't fit into 'the system' but I have no faith in Martinez’s system.
Edit: v Arsenal we were caught cold twice due to Mori being out of position. Jags the Moyes fanboy elderly coward captain didn't shout at him *tongue in cheek*

I have the opposite view...

To be successful with this style every player needs to be able to keep the ball and pass it to a team mate. The only players who are weak at passing are Jagielka, Coleman and McCarthy (Baines notably has gone downhill head also).

However McCarthys job is to pass it simply to keep the ball...hes no busquets but i doubt he gives the ball away and can pass to Barry or Stones/Mori to rebuild attacks.

If we keep the ball well and are able to play it from the back then we wont be giving the ball away so much and can plah a higher defensive line....NONE of the defenders other than Stones and Mori (possibly also Oviedo and Galloway) can keep the ball at a level which is needed = sitting too deep in defence.

As per the centre backs especially, Mori and Stones are "on paper" the best partnership. However Mori is adapting in his first season and Stones has gone through his first bad patch as a 21 year old....Jagielka is a good defender but doesnt fit the style of play. In your EDIT you mentioned Jags saving Mori....i also saw Mori save Jags 2ce against arsenal.

What Martinez needs to do in the summer is bring in HIS OWN players....he hasnt done too badly with his signings for the first eleven so far.

I think we need defenders who can defend but also who can pass the ball from the back....if we had a Marcel Desailly type (Kalidou Koulibaly'Napoli') then he would tick the boxes for me.....as would a pair of full backs who defend first and dont get caught out of position so much.

These crosses coming in should be stopped at source and were cut down when oviedo was in for baines....i wonder if coleman had competition from a more defensive right back if these crosses wouldnt also stop from the right.

Arsenal and Barca dont have pure defensive players who cant distribute effectively (Jagielka) nor do they have full backs caught out of position so much as they have been playing so long as attacking full backs which we dont really need anymore.

so you haven't seen posters here saying that they would be happy with a cup final and finishing 12th?

You may have missed some posts
I said 4th from bottom and win the cup this season !!
NEA.

I just want a cup. It will start something.

The pre season photo of the team with the cup at the front again, christ, i was slim and still had ambition last time we won anything.

You can bring in the best defenders in the world but if you don't coach them as a back 4 and set the team up in a cavalier manner you wont keep clean sheets
