From an early WIGAN Q & A...

'Bobby said he could keep us there all week when it came to tactics and that he would constantly change tactics to play against every team...'

LOL

Sound...

This would literally erase any kind of wing support we have as we know it now - our width relies on fullbacks bombing forward to open space for wingers to move in to or just to drag players out towards them, leaving space between them and the CB, and vice versa (wingers cuts in, full back has loads of space behind him... Coleman makes me sad as he usually gets the most time to cross and his crosses make kittens cry)

It's not impossible to get two "defensive" full backs but Boberto will have to rethink his whole gameplan and stop playing 2 DM's, which I'm 1000000% for. Leave McCarthy (as Barry is getting older etc) as our most defence-minded midfield enforcer sitting right in front of the CB's just to take the ball off them and play simple possession passes (which he can do as we all know), and push one of the DM's further up, so essentially we have a 4-1-4-1, not a 4-2-3-1, with more play coming through the middle. The full backs themselves in that case don't even need to be Hibbert-levels of defensive, it's just that they won't bomb forward as often and would cross from deep instead of overlapping for no reason (at times), leaving us open to counters.

What I've just written goes against everything Roberto believes in though, so the chances of it happening in real life are slim to none, and we all know that.

Comparing the Barca/Arsenal style to ours is just silly though, as they are fundamentally different. Both teams often play in that 4-1-4-1 (in defence; 4-1-2-3 or 4-3-3 with a guy sitting deep if you will) I just described, we play nothing like that - two defensive midfielders to cover the positions of the full backs overlapping (way too) deep.

We wont know what formation he favours till he starts rebuilding the defence...so far hes signed Mori and Galloway as long term signings. Both have done well considering.

I wonder now he has money if he wont make a few additions....phase out the old guard a bit.

Also dont forget at wigan and with us he isnt afraid to change formation...we dont know what his end game is and wont do until he has 11 of his own players in the side. So far he has 7 or 8....

We're the only ones witnessing the rage because it's localised on forums like these. I don't think it represents the wider picture.

That being said, we have no idea what this new owner of ours is like. I made a prediction yesterday that Martinez would be here next year regardless, but that was actually quite silly. We don't know this chap's values or what his aims are. Hopefully, this season ends with us lifting the cup and Martinez getting another go next year.

Tbh prev, I'm pretty sure the majority of Evertonians either have a feeling he isn't the man or full out want a rolling head. The fa cup I'd imagine isn't why GP hasn't gone full Chernobyl. The amount of different people on here even post Chelsea have to me some sort of barometer. But any Dublin toffees I know personally have the same view.

What's the word on the street on Liverpool laaaas?

I am willing to bet money on "he won't change a thing unless we get a horrific run of injuries and he HAS to", and we'll still play the exact same formation.

Doesn't matter who he gets mate, and I'm largely unarsed about his unsuccessful Wigan run (but won the cup before getting relegated, woopee). Fact is, he has no idea how to coach and organise a defence - we can get Costacurta and Nesta in their prime and they'd still look like they're new to the game. At this rate, he's getting himself sacked, so I'd rather he doesn't get time and money to get "his own" players in, just to get sacked and for the next manager to have to get his own players in and so on.

Going by that logic then, Martinez has made a £28m striker look like a £50/£60m striker?
Very true, he has. Many forwards/wingers have improved massively under him, has to be said. He's a fantastic attacking coach, but a shambolic defensive coach.

There's an old saying - "great attacking wins you the game, great defending wins you the titles". We seem to only have one part of that philosophy somehow, for some reason, as defending is not a valid option.

Everyone I know wants him gone mate, and that's the impression I get in the boozers by the ground.

So was it someone Martinez signed then? I doubt it.

If this was a team in an office then my money would be on:

Jagielka= kept as captain for last few seasons as knows the club and players and wouldnt look good to punt him or strip him of the captaincy inmediately. Not Martinez choice of captain and cant play our system at all...always left as the unmarked defender to pass the ba out of defence as the opposition cover Mori/Stones.

He'll be phased out this summer.

Baines = May have an existing injury but has not been good for 2 seasons now. At face value looks a good player but weak defensively and out of position for arsenals goal which is a common occurance these days. Lost his place to oviedo and perhaps someone who martinez didnt feel comfortable moving on when he first came to the club...

Weve already seen Oviedo take his place due to his superior defensive qualities.

Howard /Gibson / Osman / Pienaar = adios to the old moyes guard.

Hibbert staying on as a coach i believe.

Time to focus now on defensive signings...hes got every other position right.

Baines is better than Oviedo in every way you want to rate a player besides one Zat, he is older, ahhh now i get whay you want shut of baines and Jagielka - they also happen to be older than 21

Will probably get a waring for this, but honestly don't care mate, your talking utter [Poor language removed]

Read that and tell me lunch doesn't creep up your oesophagus..
Also..

Martinez is battling to hold on to Cattermole, 21 – a £6million target for former Latics manager Steve Bruce at Sunderland.

But he thinks the midfielder can achieve his dream if he stays at the DW Stadium.

He added: “He is trying to get into England’s World Cup squad and I’ve never seen anyone as focused as him.

“Lee is a leader – you don’t get many players like him.

“In my eyes he deserves to be close to the World Cup squad and he is focused on the role he has at Wigan.”

Just looking at the defence ONLY...

Coleman -- Frequently out of position
Jagielka - No leadership and has been saved by Mori
Mori -- If he cuts out basic errors our best defender
Stones - top notch but had a bad run of form
Baines -- See Coleman
Oviedo -- Ok all rounder

We looked more solid with Browning/Galloway at full back (obviously) and our game now isnt solely focused on attacking full backs...we need actual defenders who can pass the ball....we have Mori and Stones...

We need to improve here and make signings to fit the system.

Baines is probably the best passer of a ball in the team lad, ofc he is over 30 now so in Zatworld he is out the door,

The issue for me is he has a style he wants to play but doesn't have the players yet to implement it. Rather than then slowly building to his style when players are added he gets our proven international players to change to his style whether it works or not.
I don't know of any other manager who doesn't play to the strengths of the players at hand. I am open to be corrected though.

I lost it when he said Barry was one of the greatest English players of all time and that he made Joe Allen a 15 mill player.
