I think to compare us to Villa is not right. Sure we are under-performing, but I think you are taking the criticisms too far.

Not right now mate but I believe if we go down the road of giving Martinez another 2-3 seasons and during that time we lost the Lukaku's, Barkleys and Stones' of the squad and don't replace them like for like (hard to convince top players when your in midtable) I certainly can see us only heading one way in the table and it's not up fighting for the top 6.

I'm just praying the new fella realises the current situation isn't sustainable, we're letting clubs like West ham, Southampton and Stoke move ahead of us, even the new stadium issue, how the hell can he justify a £300 million+ new stadia project with our league form? How can we attract the additional 15-20,000 extra fans to buy season tickets when we are losing home game after home game?

For me it's inevitable that he goes nothing can change my mind on that, for me it's simply damage limitation to how many seasons of mid table/possible flirting with relegation that we give him before getting rid.

"Competitive decline" - from what to what? From being a success to being a failure? I must have missed that spectacular decline, because I was under the impression that Moyes achieved precisely sweet f.a. while he was here. We did nothing of consequence in his 11 years.

...and...

"Competitive decline" - from PL seasons where we never troubled 70 points whatsoever in donkeys years to one where we surpassed that mark - which any manager we have will have to match and shift further on to get a CL spot? Or a decline from winning cups to not winning cups - when we have a very decent chance this season to actually win something with a manager who wont concede defeat before any big match is played.

As said thus far: your critique of Martinez hits the rocks when attempting to justify exactly why Martinez should be judged by criteria NEVER used on any of his predecessors. Your best shot seems to be to suggest Martinez has assembled a great squad that he should have turned more performances into gold with. It's a p.o.v that was also at large when Moyes also had "the best squad since the 80s'" to manage when he was here...and never had the hysterical reaction for dismissal that Martinez faces on a forum like this.

Double standards. It's not a very good basis to argue anything form.

'The league's irrelevant...5th & 15 are essentially the same...'

+

'...hey, you there, you fools, we got 72 points...'

= DBL standards...???

We effectively are looking at an Aston Villa situation and I've said as much before. Reading Villa Talk forum there were a number of villa fans who didn't want Lambert sacked on the basis of him "building a team" "signing Benteke" etc. They then continued to be midtable year after year, losing any top player they had whilst unable to replace them with like for like quality due to not being in the challenge for European football. (Sound familiar right now in regards to Lukaku, Stones?).

Time they got rid of Lambert it was too late and relegation was slowly beckoning. Looking at this season, can you honestly say we wouldn't be looking behind our shoulders at the bottom 3 places if we took Roms goals out the side?

For me this is a crucial moment in our history and future and I just pray Moshiri is aware of this/ambitious enough to keep our best players and not listen to luvvy Bill Kenwright.

Oh for goodness sake...

Villa? Really?!

All we wanted under Moyes was better football and a cup. We didn't care about the "7th place trophy"

Now we are on course to win a cup... Yet we should sack the manager.

Yeah. Sure. Ok.

Actually the majority wanted a manager who could push us on from the top 6 and get CL. How standards have fallen people are made up with mid table and exciting 4-3 defeats.

Absolutely mate, and don't let the twisting of your words or substance-less goading detract from you being correct here.

A great point made in what is now a very peaceful happy thread on this calm Bank Holiday Monday.

Not because of league position, that;s for sure. When I turned on Moyes (after 7 seasons supporting him, btw), it was because he completely failed to give any indication that he could win us a trophy and/or play attractive football consistently. I had no stick to beat him with about CL places. None. That was down to underinvestment and why BK got it in the neck so much...amongst other things. The 7th place trophy term was used to underline that it meant bugger all in and of itself, not because he fell short of CL football.

There's no inconsistency here in my line mate.

If we lose any of the next (hopefulyl two games) in the cup mate then like Moyes - Martinez will have shown no indication either he can win one, so far we have not exactly been fantastic in the cups with him have we?
Last season knocked out for i think the first time ever in both cups first games to pretty crap teams, this year bottled a semi (yes we bottled it just like we always did with Moyes) and a semi that we cant judge yet as its not been played, a meh europe run that saw us crash out the first time we played any half decent team int he knockout - choking again, very similar to Moyes european adventures.

You say we should give martinez more time. But your not looking at the reality of the way football is mate, martinez is the third lonest serving manager now in the league

Wenger is the number 1 and despite winnign multiple trophies including two fa cups the last two years is under masive amounts of pressure to go from supporters.
Hughes number 2 longest serving (like 6 days more than Martinez) took over a team that had finished 14th the previous year and had never finished higher than 11th (so 5 consecutive bottom half finishes) - after he took over they finished 9th, then 9th again and currently sit in 8th - so on course for 3 consecutive top half finishes - a clear sign they have improved - also he has done that whilst vastly improvign the style of football they play and reached a QF and a SF in the cup as well - so pretty similar cup form to martinez

The next longest serving after thos three is Pocc at spurs who has been in the job one full year less than Martinez, so in terms of this league mate, only Wenger and Hughes have had more time in the job, one who is surving on past reputation in Wenger, and one who has shown progress in not only style of play but also in results year on year out in Hughes (took over a team on 42 points then got 50 his first season, 54 last season and on target to get around 56/57 this season.

AT any othe club the 'progression' that Martinez has done in terms of taking us backwards would have seen him sacked and those stats support that mate

You're right mate. And we are doomed aren't we. Villa.

I'll be vaulting to high heavens next season when we are 15th looking over our shoulder with this fella fumbling around. You better pray your hero finds someone who can net even a third of what Rom has or we're in trouble.

Watford and Bournemouth- 2 of the 3 promoted sides this year either level on points or above us. West Brom around us, take villa and Sunderland the whipping boys out and add 2-3 promoted sides chomping at the bit and you won't be laughing believe me.

I would counter and say to sack Martinez would be the most Villa thing we could do.

Managerial revolving door. No thanks!
