Roberto Martinez discussion

the concern from my side is the lack of potent substitutions at times. The fact we have geri and mirallas and they are lucky to get on the pitch so far this season yet kone naismith and cleverley are given roles out wide?

By all means for tactical reasons play them when you are doing a job (kone vs chelsea for example) but use your attacking wingers at the same time if you need to score a goal. The difference bringing both of them on against your united / liverpool / spurs makes a hell of a massive impact to the second half rather than playing one and unbalancing the team.

Doesn't change the fact he doesn't know what it is, AND the fact that it more than likely depends on who the opposition is.
My fear mate is that exactly this same conversation regarding Martinez will be having had long into the future. I think he thinks he's constantly tweaking selections strategically; to me it's just inconsistent tinkering , and the inconsistency of results bear this out. Bottom line: imo, he's a bit out of his football managerial depth and his stubbornness continues to retard his managerial development. I strenuously hope to be proven wrong.

I'd rather have a settled 'strong 11' too. But unless you're a top top team I don't think that's possible.

Add to the fact that what he thinks is the right team and what we think will nearly (not always) be totally different. But he's a football manager. He knows more than us. Saying he's a bit out of his depth is risky mate. It basically means you yourself can't have any opinion on football as you're way way way out of your depth.

We have to trust him. It's all we have.

I reckon he views his best 11 as:

Howard
Coleman....Stones....Jags....Baines
McCarthy....Barry
Lennon....Barkley....Cleverley
Rom
Whether you or I agree with him is certainly up for debate, but that's what he views as his best 11 IMO. Mirallas would replace Lennon in that lineup for me.

I think for him it depends on the oppisition we are playing. And I agree to an extent that's the right approach in the position we are currently in.

for me the difference between RM when he first arrived, and RM now is in his first season he wasn't scared of anyone. He'd attack them no matter what, but now he's scared and plays it way too safe in some games. Shows the opposition too much respect.

I'm not a musician but I can recognise a wrong note or a bad bit of music...and give opinion on it. Translating this comparative to football (and EFC in particular), I can recognise when we are not playing well, and when I believe this to be sourced of poor playing set up, I can voice said belief. I like Martinez as a man, and have to agree with your last sentence, but his 'all over the shop' selections lend me disquiet as to whether he will cut the mustard.
It doesn't cause me sleepless nights or anything... just stating my personal reservations.

But are they 'all over the shop'. I'd bet you anything he knows exaclty why he's picked those players for those games. Whether it works or not is another thing.

Take the Chelsea game. Naismith wasn't even playing to start with.

The idiom 'all over the shop' suggests a mish mash, an inconsistency. I would suggest that our results and performances are very much inconsistent, (ie all over the shop). I am not saying Martinez deliberately changes things for changes sake (ie he has his rationale), but I am saying that performance inconsistency calls to question that rationale,

I think you're looking into it way too deep.

Whil I personally wouldn't have for example Naismith on the flank ahead of Mirallas for any game, Martinez seems to.

Then add the other factors off the actual pitch which will no doubt have an effect, and we won't ever know about them. In my example, if Mirallas is being a nobhead in training or whatever, then Naismith gets in.

Basically, lots and lots goes on that we don't know about.
