Roberto Martinez discussion

I expect an Everton manager with the squad Martinez has inherited to get us at least into the top 7. It was different when Moyes arrived, that squad was not a top ten squad. Moyes built that up slowly to leave a group of players who had been in the top 8 for most of a decade. For me an average Everton manager merely maintains 8th place finishes with no cup rubs. A good one has us pushing for Europa most years and trying to challenge for trophies and the top 4. A really good one would build on continued Europa league qualification to try and consistently trouble the cup semis and the top 4 on a regular basis.

Ok, we have the 10/11th biggest wage bill in the league and a net spend of less than almost any side in the league over the last 5 years

Is it not just a subjective view that the squad is in the top 7 best squads in the league?

If we do have the 7th best squad, someone somewhere has been performing brilliantly in their job given we haven't spent anything like the amount other teams have.

There's no right or wrong answer here, but is it possible that Moyes (yes, Moyes) performed so far above expectation levels that our budget would dictate that we now take this for granted? Martinez did the same in his first season. Was RM's 2nd season a reversion to the mean that our budget would suggest was our rightful place or did we really underachieve? And based on the answer to that last question, what is acceptable for this season?

The argument that "we're Everton and we should be boss la cos we were amazing 30 years ago" isn't particularly relevant now (sad as it is)

Not as simple as money though is it otherwise QPR and Stoke would have been a lot higher last season. Our continued presence in the top flight allows us to attract a certain cslibre of player. Moyes then put ten years work into the training centre, the academy, the scouting system, allowing us to grow Ross Barkleys and find John Stones'. Our player retention based on our managerial longevity is also the best in the prem allowing for continuous improvement season on season and avoiding the sweeping squad overhauls the likes of Liverpool and Newcastle do each year. They're spending money but not moving forward. The final piece is that Moyes had us firmly ensconced in the top 8. Everything is in place do even though we have the tenth highest transfer budget we are miles ahead of other clubs in other departments. For me we are most definitely a top 7 club now and I expect our managers to be able to reflect that. If they can't, then either they're not up to scratch or Moyes was a football genius. I wonder which is more likely? The media have whipped up this obsession with money to absurd levels. Look round the prem, most of these sides would get slapped by their counterparts in Europe. It is not that hard to finish top 8. I can swallow some people writing off top 4 but if you're saying we're wrong to expect top 8 or 7 then bring back David Moyes football genius.

Moyes built a superb squad, the amount of bargains he picked up for peanuts was unreal,Tim Cahill 1.5m and Mikel Arteta 2.5m.

Even the players in the current squad, Jags 5m and Baines 6m, not to mention John F Stones for 3m.

Yes he had his Bilys and his Koldrups, but then he had his Lescotts bought for 5, sold for 24m and his Fellis 15m/27.5m, outstanding work overall in the transfer market, I didnt even mind the "negative hoofball", which we did play at times, not as often as some people @davek, claim, but it was there. "His" ability to grind out results took us to the holy grail of CL football, well we all know what happened then, flick off Collina you bald headed twunk, 3 Wembley trips and a Semi against Chelsea in the League Cup, all for utter peanuts in actual real terms.

That ground work allowed Martinez to come in, add some real quality in certain areas and with a boosted kitty from our friends at Sky he added some outstanding players of his own, getting Barry in was a great piece of business, him and McCarthy are central to everything we do as a team and on their day they are a joy to watch, he added the big man upfront, who wasnt cheap at 28m, but scores superfootgols for fun, he signed the greatest talent the football world will see in Mume Besic and the young lad Galloway looks an unreal talent.

His first season was superb, he picked attacking teams who played attacking football, he made subs on the fly that changed games and we blew away almost everybody. Last season wasnt great, the football was stale and we got dicked by teams that dont even deserve a peg in the Goodison changies, but thats over now.

This season our form is up and down, in fairness we have only tasted defeat twice, but some of the draws are a little bit meh, what worries me is team selection in general, hes not as bold as he was in his first season and his subs are often late and very meh, hes a young manager and is learning all the time, I just hope he re-watches the vermin game from his first season, when Baines got injured and he stuck Gaz Baz at LB and stuck Gezza on, thats the manager I want, that 1.

Not sure what the point of all this was, was a little bored thought I would write down some thoughts, if anybody ever quotes any of this I will deny writing it and I will maintain my stance that Bobby is an utter clown and I want him sacked.

Abridged version:

"Moyes was a ginger hoofball merchant; El Gaffer re-opened the school of science".

Good post mate.

How have we been a mid table side for decades?
I disagree with you about jimmy mac at the moment he runs round putting out lots of fires and is twice the player shelvey is.
The premier league is changing with all the money being thrown at it and sides you don't expect will start making the top 4,why not us?
All the squads are getting stronger and anybody can beat anybody in this league

Finishing in mid-table positions in almost every season for the last 20 years is how we have become a mid-table club. The fact that you wont accept this shows that your perspective is being affected by blue tinted glasses, as is your opinion on McCarthy. Please let me know when your prediction of mid-table clubs gatecrashing the top four actually comes true, I think I'll be waiting a long time.

You'll have to forgive him. He thinks 5th is mid table.

I think we all love him as a figure of fun. But as a footballer playing competitive matches for Everton? Nah you're alright

I dont mind the fella, honestly hes only ever let us down once, granted it was on our biggest stage for the last few years, but hes a solid pro and cant go wrong with legends like Hibbo.

Everton hero Tony Hibbert is edging closer to a return to first-team action.

The homegrown Toffee, 34, suffered two injury-ravaged seasons before sustaining a new knee complaint in this summer's pre-season that has kept him out of the current campaign.

"Getting the injury in pre-season in Singapore was a bit of a shock," Hibbert told the Everton official website.

"It's not nice for a person to get an injury but to get it at a crucial time in pre-season, when there is not long left before the season starts, was a sickener.

"I've had quite a few injuries over the years now and it is frustrating. This was one of the cruelest ones because I'd had a good few weeks under my belt in pre-season. But that's
football.

"I've progressed well and have just started training with the lads again. I just need to get that sharpness back in my legs and in my mind but that will come in the next couple of weeks."
