Roberto Martinez discussion

I hate stuff like this. People watch football all their lives, their opinion is as valid as anybodies.

I'm sorry, but that is just demonstrably untrue. You hate what I said, I can't stand all this "everyone's opinion is valid because it's an opinion" bollocks. I've seen/read people who've watched football for 30 or 40 years who wanted Duncan Ferguson as our next manager.

Not everyone's opinion is created equal. That's why we have these things called experts, and that's why people like Alex Ferguson, 999 times out of 1000, will have more informed opinions than the average (even long term) football fan.

I'm not concerned at all, i think he'll do well. He's a young bright manager, who is very intelligent, knows world football very well. He wants his team to play football the right way and understands tactics and what he needs to do to win games, by all accounts he is a very good manager and his eye for players from all over the place is very interesting. For a young manager he has already managed at the top level and sets his teams to build a legacy, like at swansea he set the basis for them to go on to do what they have done today. Even the constant relegation battles are a big experience for a manager, especially a young one. There will be hard times and there will be good times as transition takes place, the squad he has inherited are of a very high standard, but they are aging so slowly he will have to replace them and do what moyes did to an extent. He will get better and he will have time, and in the end i think he will become a very good manager for us. He's only been in charge of us for nine days and for the first few months it'll be hard to adjust, but give him time and trust him. Coyb.

spot on mate

your right there davek, he will need a bit of time to make his mark with the team, this year to learn about the squad and who fits into his system ect, think he will get up around 8th to 6 th and win both cups that would be ok

Ha Ha. This could be a tall order. Second season maybe. :P

They are experts because they have played the game. There may be other experts out there but they wont get a chance to show it because they were never players/managers etc. Im not sure how its demonstrably untrue when there is no actual proof to demonstrate it!

There are plenty of experts who get it wrong too. An awful lot of luck and good timing is involved in football in my opinion. You never know whats going to work and what wont.

Agreed mate.

I dont think - as *the experts* say - he's stepping into any big shoes of the last manager. He's got a platform of consistency he inherits that he needs to not fall too far away from, for sure. But he's been in management for a number of years now and, as you say, been in a lot of pressurised situations (good and bad situations) and shown he can deal with it. I like the way he talks about establishing an identity at clubs he goes to. Here he knows all about our past and it'll be all about re-establishing that identity of playing decent footy on the deck. If he has any sense he'll be stressing that's what he's trying to recreate.

Opinion is crap without the related reasoning.

Martinez is established, with Prem experience, want-go, actually wanted to play football on ground, and perhaps most importantly, back his opinions/decisions with reasoning.

Now list the pro for Duncan Ferguson as manager. I couldn't think of many save he bleeds blue.

But he wearing his positive mask, but underneath the mask he not to sure about Bobby, even Bill is wearing the positive mask as well.

No one who backs him are wearing any *mask* of delight. It's a realistic assessment that he's a talented manager who can do a great job for us.

And no one is expecting you to wear a mask of any description: just remain at worst neutral and let him persuade you or otherwise with results and performances.

To listen to some you'd think we just hired the manager of Marine rather than a man with more trophies than the boring plant pot who Man Utd have just made the worst error of judgement in their history about.

Ouch Dave

Just ouch

I've not read 100% of this thread, but I have to say I don't fully get it.

We're now RAWKerton mate. Nothing negative about Martinez may be uttered no matter whether you are behind the manager and agree with his placement or not.

The rest of it is just a mishmash of topics like who is allowed an opinion, Moyes being a terrible manager, fans wearing masks and Duncan Ferguson being given a mention for nostalgic reasons.

Personally I think the good people of GOT are broken by the sudden change after 11 years of similarity.. We are a large transfer budget from a full global EFC fan base implosion.

I dont get that. How is asking people to have an open mind about their new manager in any way RAWKish?

There's no mad eyed cultists talking up Martinez...as much, it appears, as you'd like there to be.
