Roberto Martinez discussion

Apparently Moyes and Martinez's styles are similar though mate? Negative. Toothless.

So i heard in here recently, anyway.

Moyes beat Sunderland 7-1 so one game doesn't really show anything. It's all about consistency. You know as well as I do that this Everton side can win 6-2 one week then not have a shot on target the week after. Hopefully the goals will stay flowing but one game does not invalidate legitimate criticism of the negative style we've seen at times over the last 18 months.

Had a feeling we would struggle if they scored before half time, wasn't look forwards to the second, and when they scored I feared the worse, but the team assembled and the manager's positivity seemed to come through and we just carried on bossing the game, ignoring their attacks and using them to advantage, devastating display of counter attacking football that tbh impressed the hell out of me.

People need to remember.

The team is set up to basically leave our central defenders 1-1 with opposition attackers with cover from McCarthy and Barry.

Its done on purpose; to push the full backs up.

A defensive coach isnt going to improve that; its a style of play which takes years to master.

That's a stupid system, i'd hope that was incorrect

One thing you can guarantee for the rest of the season is that no lower half team is turning up at GP and playing 2 up front again.

We won't have it that easy again this season, as enjoyable as the result was.

At 2-2 I thought we'd spewed it tbh, but we played some lovely football after that and squashed them.

However, I think the points about the defensive frailties are valid. We conceded 2 and but for the width of the post that would have been 4 (as Howard was beaten by both).

I agree with Mikey that he should bring in a defensive coach to work with the backline. There's work to be done there as we're as slack as a bag of bolts at times.

It doesn't take away from the result, but there's no harm in being pragmatic about the entire game.

"slack as a bag of bolts" is a new one to me, but I'm now gonna average about three uses a day. Big fan.

Barcelona's buyback option is for €9m at the end of this season and €12m the next. But a) Deulofeu would have to agree to the move which he's unlikely to do unless he has a chance of first team action after his spell on the bench at Sevilla b) their current manager doesn't like him for similar reasons to Emery, lack of tracking back, whilst Gerrard clearly enjoys working with a more relaxed Martinez c) their transfer ban ends soon so they can buy more established players and/or promote others from their academy that better suit Enrique - whilst he is still there doubt there will be any interest on either side.

Cheers @bicycleheader for the info on Munir, only seem him a couple of times myself.

Reporters in both the UK and Spain have regularly commented that Martinez and Barcelona seem to have a very amicable relationship. Fair point that to date the only tangible proof of that is Deulofeu but at the time his loan was seen as a major coup for Roberto and personally would like to see that link expanded on.

Think the good relationship stems from the fact Martinez is a Catalan firstly and secondly he is basically best mates with Cruyffs son Jordi, think one of them was best man at the others wedding - so BIG Barca ties with that relationship as well

Oh yeah and come January Barca will buy Nolito off Celta so another player ahead of any possible return chance for Deulofeu

Had no idea about that.

I think this is the point, and why Martinez is identifying the best young CBs in the lower leagues to bring in and develop while they're still teenagers. It's evidently a long-term plan that he has in mind.

We also need a top class 'keeper because, no matter how efficient the system, the opposition will always get chances. It's no coincidence Martinez finishing fifth in 13-14 was the same year Howard had the best season of his career.

Had no idea about that.

Remember reading some-place about it whilst Martinez was still at Wigan mate then the Echo ran with a story about them after we got him as manager.

Only just thought about it when LL done her post and it reminded me, been a shitter of a few weeks for Martinez with Howard and then Cruyffs news as well really :(
