Roberto Martinez discussion

I think this is the point, and why Martinez is identifying the best young CBs in the lower leagues to bring in and develop while they're still teenagers. It's evidently a long-term plan that he has in mind.

We also need a top class 'keeper because, no matter how efficient the system, the opposition will always get chances. It's no coincidence Martinez finishing fifth in 13-14 was the same year Howard had the best season of his career.

I think this is often overlooked. The way we play leaves us open at the back so often, like you said, the opponent inevitably gets chances. With the importance of confidence in the system Martinez plays, softly conceding goals as we did last year took the wind out of the sails of the side and we often conceded more and more. The goals compounded themselves and that's why we saw stupid defeats with turgid football. Palace at home last season was a prime example. We go one-nil up, cruising, playing some really aesthetically pleasing football. A simple ball isn't dealt with by Stones, Howard comes crashing in, Palace equalize, and we collapse. In 13/14, we simply didn't concede too many of these soft goals. We won games with Howard almost always having that one save, the save he didn't make last year near often enough. I felt like we would concede every time the opponent had an effort on net last season, and I think the side felt that way as well.

When the goalkeeper plays well, it bolsters the whole side, it seems as if the confidence in the team radiates out from the goal. The defenders are more sure both with the ball and when defending it, the midfielders are more willing to make the risky pass, and Lukaku benefits mightily from the midfielders feeding him with greater boldness. The goalkeeper has to inspire confidence in the side, and that's why Howard has to be replaced sooner rather than later. A consistently good keeper will transform this side, enabling us to maintain great moments of form, as we did in 13/14.

Barcelona's buyback option is for €9m at the end of this season and €12m the next. But a) Deulofeu would have to agree to the move which he's unlikely to do unless he has a chance of first team action after his spell on the bench at Sevilla b) their current manager doesn't like him for similar reasons to Emery, lack of tracking back, whilst Gerrard clearly enjoys working with a more relaxed Martinez c) their transfer ban ends soon so they can buy more established players and/or promote others from their academy that better suit Enrique - whilst he is still there doubt there will be any interest on either side.

Cheers @bicycleheader for the info on Munir, only seem him a couple of times myself.

Reporters in both the UK and Spain have regularly commented that Martinez and Barcelona seem to have a very amicable relationship. Fair point that to date the only tangible proof of that is Deulofeu but at the time his loan was seen as a major coup for Roberto and personally would like to see that link expanded on.

Ohhh yeah of course I would like to see more 'proof' that its strong, another words more transfers from them. Only issue I have with Barca in regards to dealing with them is that they always want buy back clauses in their contracts. Having first option is fine but pre-determined figures mean that as long as the deal is in place you never really own the player because they can just call the player back if the said player is home grown/ fan of the club.

Fans were worried we could of been 2-0 down after 19 minutes. Only when the fans started snarling did the players sort of wake up, even howard was telling a fan in the Gwladys to Shut up. If he was worried about nearly conceding two goals in 19 minutes then his attitude didn't come across right. A manager must look at the finer details to find improvement in what is a forever changing environment. 6-2 was a cracking result but we need to address how they nearly ended up 2-0 ahead in 19 minutes plus the fact they came back to 2-2 in a fairly easy manner.

A win to nil against West Ham would be a indicator that bobby is addressing the finer defensive details.

I think you've nailed it there. There was never an enormous difference in the quality of our play between 13-14 and 14-15, rather a significant dip in the form of our goalkeeper that then ramified outfield when we'd concede and lose momentum.

Maybe it wasn't the only problem but it was one of the most significant.

6-2.....6-2

Martinez himself has commented on our defensive frailities against both S'land ( which I quoted somewhere yesterday ) and Arsenal.

Plainly it's right to be chuffed about our performance going forward and scoring six goals is fantastic, but you improve by consolidating what you've done well and working on what you didn't do so well. Based on his words, I'd say Martinez is aware of that and will be talking about it to his staff and players.

If it's fit for Martinez to talk about, then it's fit for GOT to talk about it too.

Iron out the majority of those mistakes over the course of a season and we're in with a good chance of European footie next season.

To be honest mate Martinez is the manager he should question every little thing.

As a fan I couldn't care less what happens as long as we win. What I think if the defence matters little.

As I said to @Mikey_Fitzgerald yesterday, if you can't be happy after a 6-2 win you never will be.

I'm very happy we scored six excellent goals and got 3 points

I'm unhappy that our defence was poor and doesn't appear to be improving

I don't see why winning all of a sudden makes those defensive flaws evaporate

It's a question of balance

True, but none of whay any of us think about anything to do with the team really matters.

To go all managerial b/s on you, look on it as a Continous Improvement exercise where, even though we know we won't achieve it, we're striving for perfection.

First and foremost, praise the team for the performance, then work on the weaknesses.

Its a great win and we looked beautiful going forward. But just because we win by 4 does not mean we can ignore conceding two, thanking the woodwork twice and looking like conceding every time a pis* poor Sunderland team attacked us. Barry and McCarthy is not working as the so called 'shield' in front of the back four. A defensive coach is most definitely what we need, because going forward we can beat anyone, at the back against more clinical sides we will be punished and be left mid table.

You know me better than this!

I think my point is we as Evertonians don't usually have a great deal to shout about. A 6-2 win is a rare thing. I fee we should maybe sometimes forget the bad bits (which I fully acknowledge there was a bit on Sunday) and enjoy a 6-2 win to the max.

As Everton fans we do usually have a lot to moan about. And that time will come again. We all know it.
