Roberto Martinez discussion

It's speculation also to believe the player will resist a move to get him back to Barcelona. If he's being told he'd be involved in the first team squad (or told they want him back to then sell on again to another CL club) then how easy would it be to decide to stay at a club not offering that that?

I'm speculating, sure. But there's more logic to it than believing a player would turn a move like that down and stay with Everton.
Err, because he believed last time when he went back that he'd get a chance at the first team....and ended up miserable in Sevilla instead. Whilst Emery is still at Barcelona doubt he'd trust their promises a second time.

In Martinez he has found a manager who trusts him and brings out his best and if his 6 year relationship with his girlfriend is any indication he is a lad who values stability.

I'd lose a fair bit of respect for him in that scenario to be honest, especially if we're on the cusp of CL our self at that point
He's a talented professional footballer with no connection with the club beyond playing for us. I wouldn't take it as a personal insult, tbh. It'd be nice if he felt otherwise and stayed regardless, of course, but I wouldn't expect it of him.

Sevilla was a good move for him. He couldn't win over his manager there, but it was a move to a CL club and one with a lot of European success in recent seasons. Nothing to do with Barcelona screwing him over. Just because such a move didn't work out as expected I wouldn't see that as a major reason for him to turn down a journey back to Spain if/when it's suggested for him.

I'd love to see him stay on for years to come. He's the difference between us being competitive and potent. However, I'm realistic that we'd face a massive problem if Barcelona exercise that buy back clause.

From reading between the lines of a few of his interviews he seems to feel Barcelona let him down and didn't give him a chance, particularly their manager. At the time Sevilla were only in the Europa league, same as us last season, and he's indicated that if he'd known he was going to be farmed out again he'd have preferred to stay at Everton where he was settled.

For such an avid supporter of Martinez, think in this instance you underestimate the attractiveness of working with him for Gerard.

He's unlikely to earn a testimonial with us but genuinely don't think he'll go back even if they offered it this coming summer - but then I didn't ever think we'd sign him permanently for less than 5m!

In a strange way the Sevilla move was a good move for him.
In playing for Barcelona and his initial loan move with us, he was great attacking but defending was a blasphemous word to him. The Sevilla manager has made him aware that to play regular football you need to be able to defend and help the team out in all areas. I honestly believe we are seeing a far better player this season, a player who's work rate has increased no end.

Last season has helped in his overall game

Imo, if it was a guarantee of a fair hearing at Barcelona he'd leave; ditto a chance to play in any established CL outfit. Martinez is a factor, but if he cant offer better than that scenario then he and we will lose out.

Disagree, think Gerard made the move over the summer with the plan on being at Everton for two seasons and then assessing his options. Guess we'll see.

Are you saying he waves to other fans like he waves at us...

I try not to remember
I think the first time I was ever traumed in such a way was the Bonfire Night mauling away to Aston Villa where we got beat 6-2. Late eighties, Peter Beagrie's debut in the ace silver and white striped kit.

It was at that point where I realised that we were no longer boss. I had clinged onto it for a year or two but it was all over then.

Feeling your pain bra.
