Roberto Martinez discussion

We're 5 points better off than this stage last season.

Mind you, this time last season Moyes team went on a great run, picking up 21 from the last 33 points. If we get anywhere near that in our last 11 games this season it'll be a massive achievement and propel us easily into Europe.

martinez cant lose by the look of it. Or just behave,m strengthen to the point that they will finish up into double figures ahead of us

I don't think that's true. If we bomb this final quarter of the season, I think he will be in for excoriating criticism. My point is that whilst I agree with you that EFC has better players this season, such does not necessarily extrapolate to a better table standing than last year, as the 5 other teams above us last season are also playing better (either through similar personnel improvements OR from existing personnel just playing better football this year than last eg Liverpool).

..we're 6 points better off. But agree, that a similar 11 game points haul to last season will easily see us playing Europen football...but not CL

Points total is the more objective comparison. But I think most will also go on the 'soft evidence' of perception about the way we now play as opposed to under Moyes. Leaving out the possibility of the total last quarter collapse you mentioned, I reckon most will say they prefer the footy we played in the period from the end of September through to the New Year.

Pipe down about points Dave.
:)

I'm looking for a 66+ pts tally. PL record for Everton.

...and there's a shield for it....

.....which is nice.

points total doesn't mean a thing if we've got nothing to show for it. It's about how we perform and get results when it matters.

It matters that we get 6th so we qualify for Europe, that's the only points total we need.

I agree Dave re points total being the most objective comparison. My references to table standings were by way of rebutting ianefc's qoute" last season 6th lets see where we end up this season and with our strongest squad for the past 'x amount of years' and that is an opinion i agree with. So surely we should be doing better?"unquote.
So, in summary: a better squad this year should translate into more points than last, but not necessarily a better table position"

yes, we are aware of this...but if you are comparing one season's performance against a previous years (which is what we were doing) , then they have relevance

it's not 'performance' you're comparing, it's meaningless numbers.

It's easy to get 3 points when there's nothing riding on it.
