Roberto Martinez discussion

I could show you Everton's present extended squad list and we could say without a shadow of a doubt most probably wont be used if we got a new manager tomorrow.

Are you sure about that? We've got a game against Spurs coming up, not much time for a new manager to change a whole squad.

I'm particularly enjoying your suggestion that Ferguson would be considered a very good player by all clubs outside of the elite - not your usual opinion of the man.

A huge amount of absolute rot in that squad. Virtually nothing to sell to raise funds either; Martinez got £27m for Fellaini.

He also got the best part of £14M for Anichibie and Jelavic too....which tells me he's an absolute friggin genius to be honest......I recall people on here saying Fellaini was worth jack sh1t.

It wouldn't be my opinion that counted though. Undoubtedly the galoot was seen as a decent player by most at that time. Me too. Just not a legend...which is utterly preposterous.

Never disagreed with that part - and it is in one of the only things in Elstone's list of achievements!!

Same principle though.

I accept Martinez inherited a better squad than Moyes did. But they were not his players and (as with most incoming managers) he has a different method so had to adapt them to it. It was a hell of a first season. The defence has become a problem, for sure. But I'm pretty convinced that a half decent GK sorts most of the mess out. He (Martinez) will never want to operate a system that doesn't place the emphasis on attack, but that's not to say he cant keep clean sheets, as the first season proved.

The worrying thing is , if he had inherited a squad of huge incredibly slow and untalented footballers we would still be trying to play the same way. Most successful managers create a system to fit their squad rather than trying to play a system with unsuitable players. You could also say the possession based style has been surpassed in Europe by all bar the elite 2or 3 teams for a counter attack style. Martinez is 2 years behind Brendan rogers in his thinking and he is unemployed.

...but we do also play on the counter. The possession/counter balance is ok. The defensive solidity isnt.
