Roberto Martinez discussion

Anyone who can claim a cross will be an improvement.

I never thought of Howard as anything other than a decent-to-good shot stopper.

He's been, all told, a good keeper for us. But his drop off in form/concentration/ability (whatever best applies) is completely shocking and unacceptable. Without question he's cost us a handful of points this season simply by not doing the basics. Those two shots yesterday that hit the post and bar were made to look like great hits by Howard. They were made so because Howard is just not reacting to these speculative efforts and they were past him when most other PL goalies would have got a hand on them.

He's grown too comfortable I feel

If Martinez had dropped him 6-12 months ago, it might have given him the kick up the bum he needed

Still, 20/20 hindsight and all that

Robles could have stayed in after those 3 games and had some howlers of his own

Given Robles form when he first arrived Martinez did the right thing leaving Howard in. But as soon as Robles got his confidence and some form that should have seen him as a starter when Howard started to implode. I'm disappointed in RM that he's kept faith with TH over Robles. It's unnatural not to have some competition.

LOL

He scored 1 in 3.

Hes always been utter turd, he played well for 2-3 games against terrible players, but sadly we dont play Sunderland every week.
That makes no sense. No team plays Sunderland or their equivalent every week, since when has a goal return of 1 in 3 been 'utter turd' to quote you?

You say he was a revelation, he scored 11 League goals in 34 games, to add context, only 2 more than Jela managed in 13 games and only 4 more than Jela managed in a full season. Hes only scored 6 goals for us in 38 games, granted he hasnt been played as a striker ALL the time, but people have this impression that hes a good player, hes a total waste of space.

I had to explain yesterday to somebody that Kone isnt playing as a LW for us, he claimed that he was meant to be playing LW and the reason he was never on the wing is that hes just terrible at holding a position, what is his role for us? I mean what is he actually on the pitch for?

It does seem strange seeing as Robles is one of his own signings and TH was inherited, so it's obviously not blind loyalty. He must see something that the majority of fans do not. He sees them every day, we do not.

Especially strange as he went out of his way to sign Robles as well

I still believe Robles isn't the answer, but I'd certainly play him ahead of Howard until the new first choice keeper comes in this summer

But as you said, there's most likely some squad politics going on with Howard still getting picked

You have to remember that his 11 in 34 was for the worst team in the prem, Jelas was for Everton. As I said, he was very good at Wigan then got a terrible injury as he joined us. Just unfortunate we haven't seen the best of him.

I've got time for Kone, but I'd drop him right now for Mirallas

He's out of form and a rest might do him some good
Kone feels like a player, at this stage of his career, where you play him when he gets hot and then when shows the smallest dip in form you remove him from the starting side. He's up there in the age and the rest should do him good.

Lets hope Mirallas is not thrown to the lions by Martinez by starting him against a very strong Man City tomorrow night
He will probably be rusty after very little game time this season and Martinez can then sub him and cover up his own mistake and use it as an excuse for not selecting him earlier
