Roberto Martinez discussion

Byram has come out and said that Bilic was a big reason that he signed for West Ham - what does that say about Martinez? I keep saying that he only appears to be able to sign players he has either worked with or had on loan (Besic and Mori aside)

Player in saying "I love my new manager" shock.
Has any player been signed and then said "The manager's not all that, it was more about the money and the chance to play in the first team" ?

I think if i was Byram i might of chosen West Ham, a club on the rise, going to a new ground, with a manager who shows more interest in his defense then Roberto.

For me it is a worry in general about Martinez, this summer everyone is going to be spending big, i can see a lot of big games coming over from Europe, but i really cant see Martinez being able to attract anyone who is known to be top quality.
For example while we need a keeper who is really want to go in goal behind our shambolic defending? Unless we can pull off a rare league cup win we wont be in Europe, unlike at least 6 other clubs who will also be able to pay the same wages we can.

top post mate. signing yarmolenko is about as realistic as signing messi.

I am routinely stunned by posts suggesting that the defence is going to be tightened without the goals drying up at the other end. There's a reason why the Spurs and City games that keep getting brought up were low-scoring draws and not 4-0 wins for the #Entertainers.
I've been banging on about this for ages.

The fact that people seemingly believe we'll still be able to push the entire team into the opposition's half, and get the full backs camped around their penalty area, with four players in the team being virtually exempted from defensive responsibility, but miraculously stop conceding goals is genuinely baffling to me.

Exactly. People seem to think that our very own Ian Hola-way is about to unleash what would be the greatest team in the history of association football.

you can say 'entertainers' all you like, and post all the lovely goals we've scored.

But we've won six games. got 11 draws, and we're half way through the season, we haven't won at home in the prem for ages, we haven't won two successive premier league matches since last year, something is seriously wrong. this squad is capable of much more.

Quite so. David Moyes never did cheerful, and nor should the fans.

How is 11th in a table of 20 not average?

We all agreed that Everton getting 6th/7th/8th was punching above our weight. Now it seems it's 'average'.

There's some massive shifting about of goalposts to suit here.

Wow you guys wheeled off reams of endless stats about how 5th-8th was about right, and not punching above our weight.. Who's moving goalposts? You told me Moyes was bang average and doing about what he should be. Nothing special.

Why wouldn't a managerial behemoth like Martinez with funding, be able to at least replicate the positions that an average manager without funding could?

I do, however, think it's unfair to point the finger at Martinez over Byram.

Jenkinson will probably go back to Arsenal and replace Debuchey as Bellerin's understudy in the summer, clearing the way for Byram to play regularly.

It makes sense that he didn't fancy his chances of ousting Coleman - who despite what some dopes will tell you, is one of the best around.

It's been suggested that he needs to address the GK situation, yes? He was looking to do that 1 year ago. Apols, I shudda just posted the link, the quotes read kinda vague.

My point being if it was an issue then and remains so now, why?

A year ago, Howard was injured. Roberto obviously doesn't see a new keeper as a priority at the moment.
