Roberto Martinez discussion

At the very least we can all be happy he's ditched the 2 coat thing he went for at Barnsley away:

That was so odd for a usually very stylish bloke.

Wow you guys wheeled off reams of endless stats about how 5th-8th was about right, and not punching above our weight.. Who's moving goalposts? You told me Moyes was bang average and doing about what he should be. Nothing special.

I expected Everton to get top 8 this season, and I still do. But that's not average. It's nowhere. It's hopeless. It's nothing...as it always was under Moyes...but it's not average. By definition in a 20 team league, it's not average.

Why wouldn't a managerial behemoth like Martinez with funding, be able to at least replicate the positions that an average manager without funding could?

He didn't just replicate it, he bettered it in his first season here.

We'll see this May where we finish, but Martinez has built something already here that Moyes could never do: a strong squad beyond the first 11-14 in it and one that plays consistently attractive football, as befits the club's traditions.

The very next game. Chelsea 3 Everton 3

Tim Howard misses ball takes out own defender as on rushing forward given open goal. Lovely.

The Guardian; Chelsea have been huffing and puffing ever since they went two down, and Howard excelled to deny Fábregas, but he doesn’t look quite so clever here, as he hares out of his area as Costa races Jagielka for the ball. The defender I think got a tiny touch, Howard certainly didn’t, and Costa taps into the empty net!

Howard has his moments. But this was a joint effort, and not 'Tim Howard misses ball takes out own defender'.

Costa has already beaten Jagielka and there was no cover.

And Jagielka probably got a touch. Do you think we need to replace him too?

Jesus wept i must have overlooked at that the time. To be fair i was too busy telling Stones he was a pyar rat and Lukaku that he was a lazy carthorse to be taking in Bobby's sartorial elegance, but that's just awful.

I know our league position and results at the moment (and last season) don't show it; but to me it's very clear that we are a much better team than we were under Moyes. Our quality players way out number the sub standard ones. How many times could we say that in the past 20 odd years?

We are just missing out on wins. Only just. Not playing crap and scraping draws. It's a subtle but important difference.

There's no team we play against now that I don't think we have a good chance of beating. Not one. In the past i had zero confidence and a win against a 'top 4' seemed like a miracle.

People forget how far our team has come. I get the frustration but the quality of the team as a whole can't always be measured in league finishes and silverware.

Conversely when we were 1-0 ahead at Norwich and I turned the radio on and the report said "Everton have thrashed Norwich in this first half" I just knew we wouldn't win. Similarly when we were ahead against Stoke I knew we would mess it up. Similarly I was just waiting for the Chelsea equaliser. Now I am as much of a pessimist as 99% of blues, but this isn't pessimism it's expectation based on experience.
