Roberto Martinez discussion

OK mate.

Moyes taking us from 17th to fourth within a couple years, and then keeping us around the European places for the rest of his tenure isn’t an achievement, but Martinez finishing 5th with half of Moyes squad in one solitary season is an achievement?

OK mate.

There is no knee jerking from me, I’m actually bringing some reality to the discussion here. It is people like you who are participating in exaggerated delusional hyperbole, making out that this style of play is breath taking, who are similar to the whoppers on RAWK. You will be saying “Next year is our year” next.

And anyone can do what you are trying to do with Moyes 4th place achievements. I could easily say that the reason we obtained our highest points total last year is because all of the other also-rans were even crapper than usual. Or I could say Moyes had a crapper team at his disposal at the time, and therefore his achievement is more impressive.

But the fact is that we were the 5th best team last year, end of. In 2005, we were the 4th best team, end of. You can try your hardest to convince yourself that finishing 5th is a better achievement than finishing 4th, but it isn’t, and it never will be.

This man speak the truth. Whilst I personally think Moyes' 'achievments' are extremely overrated by our media mainly due to the fact that Moyes is a good old fashioned, hard working Brit; no-one can ignore the foundations he laid whilst at Everton. Martinez simply took them and added a sprinkling of star dust.

My fear for Everton is that there's too much star dust being sprinkled now - what happened to the solidarity?

Time will tell.

It's easy to just blame the defenders but someone needs to provide cover as well when both full backs bomb on frequently. The style of football leaves us open at times, we need more mobility in midfield to cover, and Barry while good at what he does do, does not have that mobility. He needs to stay put.

If we had brought in another centre back in the Summer, we'd have had too many players for those positions, which is a waste of resources. Martinez splashed the budget on Lukaku and I'd be surprised if many disagreed with him. If Lukaku continues as he has done over the years he'll be worth twice as much in two years time, and over the years it's been not having a proper goal scoring striker that has held us back.

We have 2 players for every position in defence. Coleman-Jags-Distin-Baines vs Hibbert-Stones-Alcaraz-Garbutt. Obviously it's not like for like in terms of quality but the players are there. We didn't need one more unless someone was going out. You also have Besic and Galloway who can both play in defence as well as the younger kids. Natural selection will change the back four around, and it's likely Stones will come through and be a starter, but he's made mistakes himself.

For me Martinez has made a mistake with the preparation for the season and then playing too many players who were not up to the required fitness levels at the same time. Jags was injured last season and mentally had a bad WC, so perhaps needed a bit more management, as for me he's the one who has looked off the pace the most. I also don't like both full backs bombing on at the same time every game, when sides sit back and try to hit us on the break, we need to make sure we don't leave ourselves exposed.

I totally agree we have defended poorly as a team. I'll get stick as usual for bringing Naismith up, but the way we are set up when he's playing leaves us exposed when attacks break down. He gambles a lot getting in ahead of Lukaku in the box and there's a lot of room for the opposition to get hold of the ball and move with it. That has the effect of placing a lot of pressure on the two DMs. You wouldn't want to be doing Barry and McCarthy's job right now. They need to provide cover for the CBs and shift across to fill gaps when the FBs get forward. The addition of hardly any cover in front of them means they are stretched beyond what's possible and the defence is exposed.

However, that's not to say that the defence have a free pass. They've been hopeless dealing with almost anything put into the box all season. You point to Galloway and Besic, but they're untested in the PL as CBs. That was never going to be a likely answer if the two veterans started to splutter. Martinez looks to have returned to old Wigan ways on the defence: keep faith with old hands like Caldwell, Alcarez and Scharner and let the attacking flair of his teams carry the day. He needed to move decisively for someone within price range with a lot of experience and a big future ahead of them - someone like Van Dijk fitted the bill.

Now where can one by a martinez mask

We went four years winning a combined 4 games before Christmas not long ago at all.

I find this hysterical reaction really weird because shouldn't we be used to bad starts?

2 years of actually playing well in autumn and suddenly we've forgotten how to cope with losing the odd game early doors.

Exactly. Some complete over reactions on here. We'll be fine. We always are. I still reckon we'll win Europa but I'm forever the optimist.
