Even in my own brain, I'm having a hard time coming to terms with how I feel about Martinez. He's done a fantastic job of assembling a squad with lots of talent, and getting young players filled with massive potential. But that squad still includes a goalkeeper who is completely undeserving of a job as a Premier League footballer, never mind being the #1. And that's all on Martinez.
He's also managing a team that looks like it should be threatening the top four, but instead isn't even capable of putting together two good games in a row. The football looks good, in terms of approach, but the results don't match it.
On the other hand, I'm always a big believer that more responsibility for poor play needs to fall on the shoulders of the players on the field, and not the manager. Yes, a manager should try to motivate, instill confidence, teach a team to concentrate, etc. But these are professionals that get paid a boatload of money. They shouldn't need someone else to motivate them and convince them to play up to their potential.
My biggest fear is that Martinez won't get this turned around in time to see what could be accomplished with the collective talent as they continue to mature, and eventually Lukaku, Stones, Barkley and Deulofeu will be sold, leaving us all to wonder what might have been.
