Roberto Martinez discussion

You make your own luck Toff.

The manager in his press conference today said it evens itself out over the course of the season.

It's also a fact that last season, we finished 11th and this season, we're currently 12th.

And it's also a fact that we've got to the semi-final of a cup, and that there's plenty of time left in the season. It's a fact that, while we have conceded loads, we're the league's 3rd highest scorers.

Yes, you make your own luck to an extent, but tell me what we did so wrong to deserve those decisions at Stamford Bridge and the other night?

So they lost 2 fantastic players. Their best 2 players, both top drawer.

And they bought inferior ones to replace them. Players that 2 managers couldn't get a tune out of.

And then Pochettino turns up......

Pochettino is a better manager than Martinez, i'm not arguing with that.

However, when Pochettino moved to Spurs, you wouldn't have said that.

So what's your point?

The point I was making is that they're going to be bought by other clubs in the summer and seeing as we're staying in mid table they won't want to stay.

How do you know for a fact we're staying in mid-table? There's 15 games left in the league. That's a possible 45 points. Obviously, we ain't gonna win them all. But there is just as much chance, at this point, of us finishing 7th as there is 17th. It's in the balance.

Crack open the champers. We beat Norwich (on pens after a draw), Middlesbrough, Reading and Barnsley (3-5...)

and that there's plenty of time left in the season. It's a fact that, while we have conceded loads, we're the league's 3rd highest scorers.

With respect, I don't care.

The points total, and league position is all that matters.

We're 12th after 23 games, the exact same position as last season after 23 games.

We're 12th because that's where we deserve to be, and that's not good enough.

Maybe speak to a Newcastle fan who'll tell you about how lucky we were to leave Newcastle with a win...

You're talking about a game or two, I'm referring to all last season and the other 20 odd games this season.

I've already made it, what's yours?

What point was that? About Spurs' spend?

Spurs have a negative net spend because they sold a player for a world record fee and another one for £30mil.

A season and a half ago years ago, when Potch went to Spurs, we had just finished 5th in Martinez' first season.

3 home wins all season.

7th is never gonna happen.

Our goals conceded is only outdone by the bottom 5.

There's zero signs of that changing of late, and we seemingly need to score 3 to get a point ffs!

1 win in 11 with this great squad making the same mistakes week after week says you are talking tosh my friend

to say there is just as much chance of finishing 7th would require a turnaround in form and style that we haven't seen in 18 months. Not impossible but improbable. Especially since we have a young team who haven't learned how to win.

Although in fairness he did go on a late season run with Wigan every year to narrowly avoid relegation. Well almost every year

Look what a mess he made of wigan

We've got a young squad that has a lot to learn. That's correct. It would be detrimental to them to come out in public and say 'we're not good enough'. Dreadful for morale. I'm sure in training they're working very hard to fix it - as he said.

Ref decisions have cost us in the past two away games - heck even against Swansea we could have easily had a penalty... They're not the only reasons we didn't pick up the wins, no, but they are a big part - especially the Chelsea one. I don't see how anyone can argue with that???

I CAN argue with it mate, and it's easy to - as depressing as that is (and I don't mean that in a condescending way mate) - because, simply, this is the form and the way of the man. I implore, look over his previous. He will not, EVER, deviate from his philosophy. In an odd way I admire his commitment to it, it's admirable in a skewed yet ultimately damaging way. But that philosophy will NEVER fit in with the prem league because it's almost all (his philosophy) based around attacking football, yes? And in turn that poses huge problems because teams with similar attacking capabilities (coupled with defensive prowess) can take us apart almost at will. It's no coincidence that what we've beaten of late (league wise) reside in the bottom of the division, know why...it's because they're pretty much lacking the firepower of all the others, ergo struggle to score...

As for the CHELSEA game mate, I'll say it again...we were 2-0 up and in a position to kill the game.

We didn't kill the game.

We DON'T kill games. And we very, VERY rarely win them either. That's the crux of it really...

How do you know there is a lack of drilling? No fan has any clue what's going on in training?

I've spoken to people who have first hand experience of Martinez's training sessions and the general theme is that there is a distinct lack of specific organisational and tactical training. He blends it into technical sessions.

Both Osman and Baines have said about the lack of practise defending set pieces. Against Newcastle last season Garbutt said they hadn't trained in the 3 CB formation. I'm sure there have been others as well come out and say things about defensive prep and training.

His methods certainly don't seem to be working right now or for the past 18 months.

My original point was that saying that we were 'penniless' as an excuse to cover Martinez obvious under achievement was a nonsense.

As Pochettino has moved Spurs forward with a negative net spend. I could have chucked Leicester in there, or Watford, or Palace - who've all done better with less resources at their disposal. And their managers haven't taken 2 1/2 years to put together a side that leaks like a sieve.
