I think time to build (that is mainly down to funds available in comparison with other teams) is the essence of success or failure. IMO he hasn't barely had enough time yet we have a very good team and squad that is just struggling to find that balance that comes with time. Martinez is looking for a formula for success and not just PL stagnation. He wants to challenge and not just exist in the top half of the table and to me that is the big difference but it is also harder to achieve and needs a different style to what preceded him.
