Roberto Martinez discussion

For me there is no doubt that a more favourable league position should have been the primary object after last season. Okay there have been two cup runs, one still ongoing but for me they mean sod all unless the club actually wins the trophies concerned.
Sensibly what's the expectation - top 6 and 2 good cup run / Win which is still on offer. I am sure we all would have taken this in August. Let's see what happens, we can't judge now what may/may not happen.

He has taken a top 6 team and made us into a 12th place team that to me is going backwards.
4 home wins in 8 months is disgraceful.
So if he left now we are going the wrong way and i would say that is not a good thing

See we look at things totally different. As a top 6 team we where exactly that. Best of the rest and 0% chance of cracking the top 4 in other words stuck (safe but not progressing) so something had to change....style of footy has changed from youth to top with emphasis more on ability to keep possession and play footy. This has not been to everyones liking but it is one of the very few ways of progression without the resources. Stage 1 has bore fruit and we now play a better type of football. Results are not forthcoming as of yet but we are getting close IMO. Like I have said umpteen times I would rather see us fail trying than be content with a top six position when that position is the prime objective and is classed as success. You know and I know we never had a chance of cracking the top 4 with the style of football we use to play as it could only take you so far. We have now discarded that old fashioned type of footy for the newer more progressive style which could or could not break the top 4. At least we could now have a realistic crack at it if the pieces fall into place. Its still a long shot but at least its a shot now. Therefore my friend I see that as progressive rather than backwards. We now have a loaded gun but need to shoot accurate whereas it was only a knife to a gunfight. (defeatist talk). Our new man IMO will keep the ship steady with a few extra quid for RM to get to his main aim that little bit quicker.

I agree with pretty much everything you say there, you can only get so far with pragmatism. I have doubts as to whether or not Martinez is the man to finish it off, but the plan is the right one.

I expect the manager's remit will change now that there is serious money involved, and I don't think it bodes well for Martinez.

The fact his big money signings seem to have sell-on value could be enough to buy him a crack at next season, but I reckon his days are numbered regardless. He's just not good enough, and his excuses won't wash with an ambitious, target-driven regime.

True this, it is also easier now for us to replace him, all the talk of who will want to replace him might of been valid in the past but with a rich owner on top of the TV money we are a very attractive option, and we can afford to pay him off soon as the time is right.

This is why I think RM should be allowed to see his contract out. He is young and plenty of modern ideas and he like young players will make a few mistakes along the way and be better for them. I really hope that this investment will help RM keep the players he has brought through and we go on to improve with experience.
