Roberto Martinez discussion

Can't believe people are blaming Lukaku for us shipping 3 goals yesterday in 10/15 minutes. Players miss pens, it happens and yes the game would have been over at 3-0 but if Martinez makes the right change or even kept it how it was then I still think we would have won. Everything went wrong as soon as he made that tactical change. Why would you throw another forward on when down to 10 men. I see no logic in it at all. Don't get how people can't see that, not hard like.

Yes, I agree with this. I've said a lot in the West Ham match thread, so just a quick summary here. I've defended Martinez all the way up to now. I like the guy's eternal optimism. I like the exciting attacking football he has got us playing, and the way he has improved our passing game compared to the Moyes era. But yesterday was a turning point for me. His second and third substitutions were imo tactically naive, notwithstanding the fact that he got it right with the Besic one. Showboating Niasse to the Goodison crowd when we were down to ten men was a massive mistake (maybe for the last 5 minutes would have been forgiveable), and then taking off Lukaku for a defensive midfielder at 2-2 was to me an admission he'd got it wrong with the Niasse substitution and an attempt to redress the error by shoring up defence when it was already too late. I won't go as far as saying 'Martinez out!' at this moment in time, i will give him until the end of the season to prove he can manage a team defensively, and that HAS to translate into points, because no matter how exciting we play when at our best, it's points that matter, and at this Martinez has, in the last two seasons, failed abysmally, translating into an exciting squad, which he has to take plaudits for having helped to assemble, abjectly underperforming. Given Martinez's track record of having failed to learn from the mistakes of the past, something he should have corrected before he joined us after his experience at Wigan, i would not put any money at all on him changing, and if that proves to be the case then for me it should be a parting of the ways in the summer, not halfway through next season's campaign. We are already unlikely to be able to hold onto some of our best players now; the spending power of Moshiri and/or an FA Cup trophy (the latter being highly unlikely imo) might be sufficient to persuade a few, but it would be criminal to allow such a talented squad to underperform for a third season in a row.

The way they poured forward when Lennon went off was quite telling. Bilic knew Martinez was handing him a gift and he duly took it.

I didn't think Lennon was fading at the time, and neither did any of the people I spoke to after the match.

What is the point of the posts in this thread? Do you feel like what you say repeating each others criticism gets a job done with anyone in power who makes a decision? It's all surface froth.

We win next week and we're at Wembley and that and a midtable finish leaves the manager in peace and in place.

He's not doing this and he's not doing that. The players are the ones on the pitch throwing handsome leads away. Do you think that bypasses completely the notice of the decision makers at this club? The manager can set this team up to get in a winning position even with 10 men; he cant make those players grow a pair and see out the last 10 minutes.

Settle down. Absolutely nothing is happening on the managerial front other than them backing him with a lot of cash in the summer to add steel.

I doubt Moshiri became a billionaire by trusting incompetent staff with millions of pounds.

He wasn't mate, he certainly could have seen out the final 12 minutes. It was a stupid decision but at least he had an excuse to divert the attention from this idiotic sub

The absolute catalan whopper
